I was lucky enough to hear these appreciations of Jinty's articles at King's. I remember her once talking about how some people write articles, others give lecture sets, others write monographs. She loved the article form, as is demonstrated by those chosen from an enormous range over a huge period.

No surprises, but possibly my top 5?

- The best realist novel of the nineteenth century, that is Braudel's Mediterranean?
- Le Roy Ladurie's Montaillou?
- Anything by Mike Davis, but esp. Ecology of Fear?
- Richard White's Organic Machine – amazing
- Bathsheba Demuth's Floating Coast

A roundtable on the future of environmental history as a subfield from early career scholars (with a small contribution from me). What is the place of scale? Of interdisciplinarity?

'Outlining how the scheme was developing in practical terms, Vallance said there was a missions board made up of various government figures, including ministers, which was defining the biggest problems the country faces. β€œThat then gets turned into a question that is an R&D question,” he said.' 1/3

A very powerful essay by Holocaust scholar Omer Bartov, arguing that:
a) Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and
b) denying this threatens to "undermine everything that Holocaust scholarship and commemoration have stood for."

No punches pulled in great @financialtimes.com interview with @britishacademy.bsky.social President Julia Black (gift link).

'There is nobody within government looking at the university system as a whole & thinking, β€˜What do we want this to achieve, both for students but also for the country?’

I had mistakenly thought the point of a uni marketing team was to create demand for & sell a product, not to be the arbiters of what we teach based on whether it’s a β€œmoney-spinning easy sell”. I was very wrong.
