As part of my book deal, I arranged a final chapter on the future: what the world may look like without organizations like USAID, the United Nations, the entire constellation of humanitarian aid and development agencies, who work to make a better world for the least advantaged among us.

....to UNMAS dismantling abandoned landmines to enable children to safely attend schools, and beyond, organizations for humanitarian aid and development do the work that allow the men, women, and children I interviewed to do what they really want to do: remain in their homeland and thrive.

From USAID agricultural programs to replenish depleted land, providing food security in former war zones for the first time in generations, to MSF programs providing maternal and infant care in regions where mortality rates skyrocketed following outbreaks of disease....

These are doctors, teachers, farmers, scientists, engineers, and more, who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of people in places where war, disease, and famine have disrupted society and forced people from their homes.

Beyond USAID, a number of international aid and development organizations are also struggling, with threats of US government sanctions looming over them for the kinds of work they do.

USAID has long been a character in 'Gimme Shelter'. USAID has been almost everywhere I've been before I arrived and after I left, a prominent reminder of the humanitarian spirit of the United States. It is devastating to see the organization dismantled and disrespected.

Beyond USAID, a number of international aid and development organizations are also struggling, with threats of US government sanctions looming over them for the kinds of work they do. These are doctors, teachers, farmers, scientists, engineers, and more....

This is one of the first things I look for during regime change - the UN provides a range of services for countries in need, and whether a new regime opts in or out of that support speaks volumes about their priorities.
