What about Mangione's mental health? Something happened to this smart and accomplished young man— social withdrawal, lack of impulse control, etc—not CAUSED by the country's health care system. More likely, he became schizophrenic, which often presents itself between late teens and early 30s.

RIP Victor Brombert, age 101, the last of the six Ritchie Boys I wrote about in Sons and Soldiers. Born to Russian Jewish émigrés, he grew up in France. As a member of the first armored unit to land at Normandy, he played a key role in the battle to liberate his beloved France.
