An Immense World is just brilliant - has changed how I see the world and how I think of my place in it. FYI - there's a kid's version of it too if a little human around you might be into it!

Yep. Rather than humans as the most powerful or evolved etc. species, we are one of the youngest. We are barely newborns next to all the life that has figured out how to flourish amongst the ecosystems of Earth.

07.09.2025 01:14 β π 31 π 12 π¬ 2 π 0I wonder if there's something about how living things come into being that determines the intelligence or capabilities available to them - does being born matter? Thinking about implications for emerging tech relating to synthetic biologies.
29.08.2025 06:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks for your response @shannonvallor.bsky.social! Ok - is that about an intelligence only available to those who are born? Or about broader consciousness? And, would you say native intelligence extends to animals and / or plants? I'm trying to work out what 'native' requires in this instance.

It's extraordinary to me this isn't getting more mainstream coverage in Australian media at a time when we're soon to enforce an age restriction on social media. Thank you for shining a light on this Jeff.

Was wondering about antitrust applied to individuals and why that doesn't seem to be a thing. I'm not a legal person so I looked it up, and it is a thing. So now it is a thing, but just another thing that isn't working as it should.
Cool.

05.08.2025 01:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Whatβs a technology that you think is overhyped? Iβm going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry. Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you donβt actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points thereβs an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto. Itβs not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, itβs that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. Thatβs key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.
