Trump, ICE set to be handed access to Australians' biometric data, ID documents The Albanese government is giving the Trump administration and agencies like ICE access to Australians' biometric data β€” and we're not being told anything about it.

What the absolute fuck.

An Immense World is just brilliant - has changed how I see the world and how I think of my place in it. FYI - there's a kid's version of it too if a little human around you might be into it!

Will this be recorded? Tough time for AEDT folks, but would love to see this discussion.

It is mind blowing to me how many people are deeply impressed by a well formatted spreadsheet.

This is amazing. If I had to design a super evil and sartorial wizard character I'd get them to look like this.

I realise I'm just a freak, but living in a multicultural city is the best thing of all time, it's just the best possible human experience and i can not understand why anyone on earth would be like "weve got to destroy this"

Yep. Rather than humans as the most powerful or evolved etc. species, we are one of the youngest. We are barely newborns next to all the life that has figured out how to flourish amongst the ecosystems of Earth.

@noemamag.com do you have any distributors of your hardcopy magazine in Australia (specifically, Melbourne?)

✍️PETITION: Launch a Parliamentary Inquiry into AUKUS Launch a Parliamentary Inquiry into AUKUS NOW! Australia Institute research shows a majority of Australians support a parliamentary inquiry into AUKUS ✍️ Add your name now >

#AUKUS needs much more scrutiny. Far too much is happening in the shadows for such an extraordinary commitment with a chaotic partner.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January This breathtakingly beautiful debut is a love letter to the written word and the power of stories to open doors to other worlds

The Ten Thousand Doors of January is so lush. It's been the perfect salve after spending a while in dense academic stuff. Gorgeous #fantasy storytelling. Highly recommend. www.readings.com.au/product/9780...

Why is it that only in writing and re-writing an ethics essay no fewer than 9000 times that you arrive at your actual, coherent argument.

Remember this, and never let them deny it, when the body count of this administration rises too high to sweep under a rug made of money.

I wonder if there's something about how living things come into being that determines the intelligence or capabilities available to them - does being born matter? Thinking about implications for emerging tech relating to synthetic biologies.

Thanks for your response @shannonvallor.bsky.social! Ok - is that about an intelligence only available to those who are born? Or about broader consciousness? And, would you say native intelligence extends to animals and / or plants? I'm trying to work out what 'native' requires in this instance.

It's extraordinary to me this isn't getting more mainstream coverage in Australian media at a time when we're soon to enforce an age restriction on social media. Thank you for shining a light on this Jeff.

@shannonvallor.bsky.social in your @noemamag.com article on the danger of superhuman AI, you reference native intelligence. I've been thinking about organic intelligence and wanted to know if there is a specific reason you use the term native instead of organic?

Was wondering about antitrust applied to individuals and why that doesn't seem to be a thing. I'm not a legal person so I looked it up, and it is a thing. So now it is a thing, but just another thing that isn't working as it should.

Cool.

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.
