Growing up in Kyiv, I heard it said that the Ukrainian nationalist hero Bogdan Khmelnitsky led pogroms against Jews, but his Wiki page does not mention it. Only rumors of conversion to Islam.

A friend made a documentary about his family’s ancestry in Austria/Hungary. He could trace it back centuries, as any new Jewish business had to be registered in the books. I can’t trace my family (Ukraine, Belarus) pre 1900. They could not own anything in a shtetl. Jew hate was stronger in the East.
