I don't know if I'd call it a trend, but I find the number of women characters getting killed off in comedy sequels bizarrely high. Like, Zoolander 2, Clerks 3 and now Happy Gilmore 2 have all had the significant others of the main protagonists killed off at the start of the movies. It's weird.
