01.08.2025 07:44 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yoon Suk Yeol refused today to be taken from his cell for questioning. Apparently he wasnโt wearing his prison uniform and stubbornly laid on the ground. Funny to imagine him lying in his underwear kicking and screaming like a child.

Ah yes. Korean conservatives are infamously tough on the US and would have negotiated much harder and not, say, sung American Pie while waving Stop the Steal signs and throwing themselves at Trump.
www.koreatimes.co.kr/southkorea/p...
Thatโs what one of the many purposes of the soon-to-happen summit at the White House is for from Seoulโs view: to quell pro-Yoon demands for Trumpโs intervention. Summit is Trump legitimating Lee, as he rightfully deserves.

31.07.2025 01:31 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Trump could walk this back at anytime, and the Korea far right wonโt give up. But clearly Trump is making a distinction right now between Bolsonaro, heโs long time ally, and Yoon Suk Yeol, who was a close friend to Biden. I think itโs that personal history which defines the different reactions. End
31.07.2025 01:01 โ ๐ 23 ๐ 3 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 2To top it off, Trumpโs recognition of Leeโs electoral victory comes on the same day the Trump admin blasts Brazil with tariffs and sanctions its Supreme Court Justice for prosecuting Bolsonaro. Koreaโs Stop the Steal movement appears to be floundering. 3/

Trump clearly โcongratulatesโ Lee Jae Myung on his โelectoral success.โ The curious inclusion of this remark 2 months after the election makes you wonder if the Korean negotiators demanded Trump explicitly recognize Leeโs win as part of the deal. 2/
31.07.2025 01:01 โ ๐ 24 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Trumpโs Truth Social post on the trade deal with South Korea. Lately Iโve been following the Korean far-rightโs push to get Trump engaged in its election fraud conspiracy theories, but the trade deal actually seems to have squashed those efforts. 1/

Another person in Trumpโs orbit, Fred Fleitz, with the American First Policy Institute, has seemingly taken up Yoon Suk Yeolโs case and warned National Security Advisor Wi Sung-rak against mistreating Yoon. 1/

More disturbing, yet unsurprising, anti-immigrant news. Racism towards non-Koreans in Korean military is pervasive. Although not Korean ethnically, to keep Korean citizenship men must serve in the military where they are harassed for not speaking perfect Korean.
www.koreaherald.com/article/1054...
Seeing a lot of anti-migrant news lately. Probably just coincidental but sad nevertheless. Immigrants pay just as much in taxes as Koreans so why shouldnโt they be entitled to the same benefits? I received 150,000 won myself and Iโm definitely paying taxes.

Kang Sun-woo has finally resigned her nomination as Minister of Gender Equality. Makes sense and sets the right tone at the beginning of the Lee administration.
www.joongang.co.kr/article/2535...
Itโs starting to feel bigger than just one minister nominee. If Lee wonโt acknowledge deep outcries from progressive civil society on personnel, what are the chances this administration makes any meaningful reforms to the constitution to deepen democracy?

Progressive newspaper Hankyoreh published an editorial calling on Lee Jae Myung to reconsider Kang Sun-wooโs nomination after noting the widespread dissatisfaction with Leeโs apparent intention to ram through her appointment

The issue I followed closely was the accusation he sent money to North Korea and several people were convicted in relation to that charge. So definitely fire. But the entire issue just disappeared when the courts suspended the proceedings. It was fairly surprising how quickly it became a dead issue
