Reporting Rare & Scarce Breeding Birds in the York Area – York Ornithological Club

As the breeding season starts, a reminder to think carefully before reporting/sharing pictures of rare breeding species on social media. They are vulnerable to disturbance & persecution. If in doubt, keep it quiet & contact local/county recorders instead.

It was ironic that they quoted the reasons why a ban is needed - wildlife and peat restoration etc, as part of reason to ignore the call for a ban. No real evidence why it shouldn’t be considered other than bland statements as to its β€˜value’ - can only keep up the fight

Sadly 2024 was one of the poorest breeding seasons for Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers since we started in 2015. Only 11 nests were found/monitored & on average only just over one young fledged per nest. This is probably not enough to sustain the population, www.woodpecker-network.org.uk/index.php/news
