Terns on wooden posts. Most are Common but one is a Roseate - much paler, almost white plumage, with black cap, dark bill and orange legs.
Terns on wooden posts. Most are Common but one is Roseate and sleeping. It has moved and now the tail and primaries are visible, slowing the thin black tailing edge contrasting with rest of primaries white are pale.
Arctic Tern on an island with Black-headed Gull and Common Terns. It is similar to the Common Terns but differs by shorter and dark red bill, noticeably shorter legs, greyer under parts, and slightly different shape/jizz.
Adult Roseate and Arctic Terns joined the Commons today at Titchfield Haven. Roseate flew in mid-morning π Also Ringed Plover and 2+ Common Sandpipers 'new' on the scrapes, plus Turnstones reappearing in the harbour.

Difficult to judge scores for some species that are regular in some places, but are bloody rare in others but will have a look at the scores per each species ready for #PWC2026.

Autumn wader passage in full swing now and has been for a couple of weeks, with plenty of early returning up particularly with rain across the country dropping them in

We are in the process of writing both last month's review and a first half of the year review, keep an eye out for these (if they ever get finished, so much to write about!). If anyone is keen to help with the running of the competition, please do get in touch! Only an hour or two a week needed,.

Sorry for the lack of interaction on here lately, I have been without a laptop for weeks. Hopefully we will have a bit more time and ability to do more with #PWC2025 soon.

With large numbers of Crossbill on the move, it could be the perfect time to get another species on your patch lists.

Not the most exciting moth trap but 13 Crossbills have gone over the garden so far, the last 3 were nice and low! π Hopegully some on patch later #HantsBirds #PWC2025

An amazing moment this morning, as 4 Crossbills flew from the Lye Valley towards Warneford Meadow, over the Churchill Hospital in urban east Oxford. Constant βchip-chip-chipβ flight calls, and huge bills seen! Second patch record β

Still common waders trickling through on spring passage, and should be for a couple of weeks yet too.
Also seems to have been an exceptionally good spring for American waders, with two Solitary Sands and now a Hudsonian Godwit, but also quite a few American Goldies + Lesser Legs & Buff-breast!
