Sigh. I wonder if Dal management will pay for the hard acryllic bite plane I cracked in two from stress-grinding this week, and the tooth I chipped in the process.

And my stress is far less than that of many of my students.

Dal only stands to lose, & long-term, from management’s current fuckery…

Old Henry - Wikipedia

I am late to this game, but Old Henry has at least one scene that’s so perfectly shot and acted it almost hurts.

Elon Musk is a symbol of American collapse in many ways, but one of the big ones is how for years he has constantly engaged in multi-billion-dollar securities and consumer fraud, and the "consequence" has been him making billions more, including from the federal government paying him directly.

Counting down the days to Kim Brooks becoming the first Dal president to preemptively lock Faculty out, threatening an entire term.

But there’s time. She can tell the Board to go back to the table to #KeepDalStrong. Better to act now than wish you could turn back time:

Last day of conciliation with @dalhousieu.bsky.social Board is Mon Aug 11. Seems like Dal plans to lock out faculty, cancelling courses/research conducted by 1000 profs, instructors, librarians, counsellors. Voice your concerns president@dal.ca. #keepdalstrong @caut.bsky.social @ansut.bsky.social

It is long past time for a new South Park film:

South Park II: Tinier, Tariffed, and The Unredacted Epstein Files

It can still use “Blame Canada” to cut down on costs.

I wish reports on Dalhousie’s deficit would clarify it’s a deficit in the operating budget created in large part by the Board’s budgeting choices. The most recent audited financial statements show multi-year $55M surpluses (revenue over expense), and massive increases in cash and cash equivalents.

"He's a piece of shit, but let's get the political science stuff out of the way," Steven told me when I asked if he thought support of Tesla could be considered apolitical. "Elon Musk has platformed white supremacists and antisemites on X. He got rid of all the moderation. He put back accounts that were clearly neo-Nazis. He's changed algorithms to promote that type of hate.
Him and DOGE did massive cuts in the government, including our civil services.
He's cut cancer research. Did I mention he was a giant piece of shit?"
"He's cut our aid to Africa, which Will result, without exaggeration, in millions of women and children and innocent people dying. Millions," he said. "I'm not a big fan of people who give the Hitler salute. I mean, I'm kind of fussy like that. He gave it twice at Trump's inauguration," he continued. "He's a Nazi. And he cheats at video games. You have another question?"

This Day in Labor History: August 2, 1917. The Green Corn Rebellion breaks out in Oklahoma against American participation in World War I. You might be surprised to see socialist activism from rural Oklahoma, but don't be! We are long ways from that today though.....

This thread (and the multiple quotes) remind me of something: it is a lot harder to build something than it is to break it down.

There is no “Democratic Stephen Miller” because turning off a hundred switches takes one person, but turning on one hundred programs is going to take thousands.

I'm a historian. History is a humanity. The goal is to explore and understand human experiences & actions. The humanities give us some general lessons about being human, w/ due regard for specificity of the past.

tldr of 30 years studying history?

Try to be kind. Especially when it's unpopular.

If you’ll recall, the “antisemitism” at UCLA involved primarily campus police allowing Zionist counter protesters to attack the pro-Palestinian camps (incl. many Jewish participants) while they did nothing, and arresting the anti-genocide students & faculty afterwards.

The first part of this James Baldwin quote gets thrown around a lot, but it’s the second half that stick with me.
