Quantum thermochemical engine could achieve high power with near-maximum efficiency โ Physics World
Otto engine design uses Bose gas as a working fluid and exchanges particles as well as heat with reservoirs
Calling all quantum steampunks! This proposed quantum thermochemical engine has a 1D Bose gas as its working fluid, and theoretical calculations show that it should combine near-maximum efficiency with high power output. Read more about it here: ๐งชโ๏ธ physicsworld.com/a/quantum-th...

But papers do it too.
For me, one that shaped the way I think was:

a lot of us at UoN are on strike today because of the threat of compulsory redundancies as part of Phase 1 of Future Nottingham
right now, it's APM (admin, professional services, managerial) being targeted
next, it will be academic and associated family of staff

A small black and brown dog in the middle of barking, nestled between someoneโs legs. There are some people standing around the white-tiled courtyard although you canโt see their faces. One of them is holding a purple and green Unison flag
A wide angle shot of the same courtyard. Many people are standing around, waving flags and banners from different unions. In the background someone is giving a speech
Pros of showing up to an anti-cuts rally:
โข Stand in solidarity with colleagues
โข Protect your university from shredding its reputation
โข Defend research and innovation

With compulsory redundancies still on the table, were still going to push back.

Double Pendulums are Chaoticn't
This is a cool video I just found on double pendulums!
Technically I believe this is a mixed phase space, something physicists in my field encounter pretty frequently (e.g. in the context of quantum scars, special states which can cause otherwise chaotic systems to behave regularly) ๐งช โ๏ธ

My view on this is that youโre still seeking to exploit someone elseโs unethical behaviour for your own advantage - two wrongs donโt make a right! So if youโre going to do it, the safe thing to do is just derail the AI (e.g. making it respond in Latin, or include a non-sensical phrase)
13.07.2025 08:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
I think itโs probably unethical to hide hidden messages saying โgive this paper an awesome reviewโ, but I think putting one telling the AI to refuse to review the paper, or spout something ridiculous so you can tell when itโs been used, could be useful! (Just tell the editor too)

I see UCEA has very generously offered us a paycut of 2.6% this year, on top of cumulative pay cuts of 16% since 2020.
Itโs unacceptably low when so many of the basic costs of living have been spiralling.
And this is on top of my own employer (Nottingham) planning mass redundancies!

Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.
There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
