and even though he must sense that this other sqq is a very different person from bingge's, he must wonder, again, after so long: was it him? did he not do enough, try hard enough? if he had just figured out the right way to be, could he have had that, too? if shizun wasn't the problem, was bingge?

It's also so devastating bc it's with sqq specifically. bingge had realized that nothing he did would be enough for sqq YEARS ago. to the extent he could, he came to terms with it: sqq hating him was always a predetermined outcome. of course it wasn't his fault, sqq was against him from the start!

I know we all already feel sorry for Bingge, but really and truly, how crushing to find out this "loser" version of yourself is so much happier because he had the opportunity to learn something core to himself when you didn't. What a big difference loving and being loved by a man made for him.

Fanart depicts Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe from the Chinese BL novel 'Scum Villain's Self-Saving System' with Binghe looking at the viewer with a smug smile on his face, his tongue out as if he's happy someone caught him making out with his lover, Shen Qingqiu. Shen Qingqiu, on the other hand, is on top of Luo Binghe with a surprised and embarrassed expression, also looking at the viewer. A string of spit connected both their lips.

Ming fan is by the door behind the two lovers, his face looks horrified watching both his master and his junior bickering together.

I saw some whitewashed danmei-inspired fiction a while ago. And obviously it bothered me. But what also bothered me was that I didn’t know quite what to do next.

I have mutuals in common with the author. So I was going to ask one of them to privately DM some concerns to the author. But when I sat down to write that message, I realized that I had no clue what I wanted from the interaction.

Did I want an apology to the Chinese people at large? Not really, no. I don’t think that would actually do anything. Did I want them to delete their writing in penance? Again, not really. I’m not trying to punish this person. What I really wanted was someone to have said at the onset of that person’s project: β€œHey! Could you think this premise and project through a little more?” I want the harm to never have existed. I want fantasies; I want alternative universes. I want something that very self-evidently did not happen.

So what now? What I’m really asking is a very simple, very commonly asked question: how do we identify and repair harm? Maybe we can try to think through this together.

What was the harm? This is a bit nebulous. The whitewashing upset me, but the reason it’s bad is not because it hurts my feelings, although my earlier writing has attempted to restore this dimension to the conversation. I think the harm is that it is part of a common practice of treating Chinese culture (and other cultures of people of color) as purely aesthetic, apolitical, and disposable. So, how do we fix this?

As a writer, I do believe that critique, like the kind I’m writing right now, is an important part of making this dynamic visible and then rejecting it. If whitewashing is allowed to remain invisible and unremarked upon, this both reinforces and naturalizes it. Ideally, I could break down exactly how whitewashing occurred, why it went unremarked upon, and some strategies for avoiding it.

But critique is charged. To be frank, I don’t trust you, the reader of this post. I don’t trust you to be chill about this. I want to be able to have a conversation about whitewashing that doesn’t result in 1) harassment or 2) a lack of reflection from people doing the harassing. I am not drawing a link between anti-racist critique and harassment. I am alluding to a social dynamic that I’ve written on before in my earlier essay β€œwhite eyes and chinese looks,” the last time I tried to write about whitewashed danmei-inspired fiction. The problem isn’t that people care too much about anti-racism; the problem is that people care insufficiently about meaningful anti-racism. Anyway.

So instead of putting this author on blast, I am writing a gentle reminder to us all to consider how whitewashing may manifest, even in our mutuals’ work. I encourage you to say something to them, if you think you know who this is about. You may be right. You may be wrong. But either way, you have started a conversation about whitewashing in a respectful way that is hopefully more productive than anything I can write to a stranger. And to the author of the story I’m talking about, I don’t have any practical ways for you to rework your story. I think it’s pretty inherently predicated on whitewashing, and I would like you to sit with that.

do we ever get confirmation on sy's age at death? i've always found it funny to imagine that he was exactly 18. going with the english version, binghe would be 14β€”a 4 year age difference. thus, post plant body, luo "shizun kink" binghe would be one year /older/ than shen "i raised that boy" qingqiu

Luo Binghe: please please please just let me get your pants off

In the light of the current Discord mess, I sincerely hope that zine organisers, especially those of +18 projects, will consider moving off Discord and establishing another way of project management. I understand that it's convenient, but reliance on Discord isn't viable in the long run.

"Why do you care if you have to ID yourself online you have to ID if you go into a bar irl or buy booze or go into a sex shop"

Yeah cool but the cashier behind the counter at the sex shop doesn't log my full government name, age, height, gender and birth place if I go in there to buy a dildo.

Yqy on top of sj, sweaty from sex, feverishly kissing his shoulders asking "one more time? Please, Xiao jiu, you're so pretty--please, just one more--!" And sj under him is incoherent and looks like he's about to pass out.

09.02.2026 17:06 β€” πŸ‘ 55    πŸ” 11    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

Which neatly puts him at the same level of qjl, of course, who society also would have sided with.

I really wonder who among our peak lords would actually fully side with sj with the whole story revealed. I don't think it's all of them.

09.02.2026 18:28 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

It's mentioned a few times that there aren't many restrictions on how a peak lord is permitted to run their peak, and aside from the sect leader, there's no one above them enforcing any sort of behavior. Strictly speaking, sj is allowed to dish out whatever punishments he wants, no matter how cruel

09.02.2026 18:28 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

HOWEVER. there are two people who very keenly understand that it is in fact still horrible to do. this is of course sj and yqy, the two people with the most power to stop it.

(I mean obviously sj more than yqy, but still. If he really wanted to, he could have stopped it)

Something i like about sv is that even though sy gets to bring his modern perspective on lbh's abuse into the story, within the context of the story it's really not considered that bad except for the attempted murder part

09.02.2026 18:28 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

You know how you have to meet settings where they are in terms of social norms, because you can't just chuck modern stances into a vaguely historical context? Like how in MDZS there's child abuse that isn't considered to be child abuse, and you just have to go with it to get what the story means?
