Of course there are some things that computers can calculate faster and more reliably than human minds, but that does not mean that computers are superior to our minds. We don’t even know all the things our brains are doing! They are weird and miraculous! And mostly unconscious! A grand mystery!

AI tuba blown by any company into my face

⚠️ AI has some legitimate uses, however...

Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or even imposed on users β€” and in social media.

This can't go on unchecked.

Like bell hooks said, β€œI think that we have to restore feminism as a political movement. The challenge to patriarchy is political, and not a lifestyle or identity... we have to return to very basic education for critical consciousness, around what visionary feminist politics really is about.β€œ

Please do not post pictures of protesters unless you have their consent. Take photos from behind them. Showing faces even with masks on just adds to palantir’s database that it gives to the police.

Solidarity with protests isn’t taking social media pics. This is serious stuff now

The more we make humans machine-readable, the closer capitalism comes to its end goal of fully treating humans like machines

I'm so tired of hearing that we need to "teach our students how to use AI" when the thing they most need to use it is a critical-thinking skill set that can only be acquired by NOT using it. I'm tired of hearing that it's inevitable. I'm tired.

We are actively, *right now*, living in an AI surveillance state that profits Big Tech companies while plundering your rights and freedoms. These are not future threats, this is our present oppression. If we can't accept the reality of AI surveillance, we can't properly resist & abolish it

If there is one lesson to draw from the history of fascism in the interwar period in Europe, it is this:

Democracy falls if and when mainstream conservatives and centrist/center-right elites decide to make common cause with extremists because they consider the β€œradical Left” the more acute threat.

The Minnesota shooter apparently used data broker websites to find the home addresses of the people he shot and murdered.

Congress has had years to do something about data brokers and they've sided with the tech lobby over and over again.

Their inaction is deadly.

As a four-decade veteran of the daily journalism business, let me tell you: Every competent political reporter in this country knows that Trump is trying to establish a dictatorship. The industry's shame is that so few journalists will say so, and the ones who do lose their jobs.

If you can't attend the rallies today for whatever reasons, something useful you can do is scour your local news outlets for coverage and share the coverage on social media and pump it out to all of your networks. Amplify what's happening locally so others in your communities are aware.

if you set the distribution of harms from pollution (e.g. cancer and asthma rates) next to the distribution of benefits from economic cooperation (e.g. income/wealth gaps) then the narrative that environmentalism is for the rich is the thing we should find surprising!

Too many people think Medicaid is the β€œinsurance for poor people” program and not the β€œbackbone of thousands of health providers/hospitals” program which props up private insurance through its existence. If we’re going to generate sufficient public backlash, we need to erase the distinction

In 49 states and at the federal level, police can (unconstitutionally) buy your geolocation data (often harvested from smartphone apps) from advertising data brokers and bypass getting a warrant from a judge for it.

Montana has become the first state to close this loophole.
