Lastly, although women have lower overall income gains than men when moving for work, the additional effects of moving longer distances on incomes are similar👥

Happy to discuss our paper in more detail!🤓

We explore potential structural reasons behind this 'step', finding that neither moves between labour market regions and into urban areas (both associated with high financial rewards) explains this pattern🏙️ This may indicate that there are inherent differences between short- vs long-distance moves🚶

Furthermore, we find that the 'distance premium' does not increase linearly - instead, the strongest differences in income gains are between movers over more or less than 200 km🤔.

This 'step' is robust to the use of different wage measures and housing cost adjustment💵.

The Income Returns of Moving for Work: Does Distance Matter? The positive link between work-related moves and income is well-established, but little robust evidence exists on whether the distance moved matters in this relationship. There are, however, theoreti....

First PhD paper (with Nico Stawarz, Heiko Rüger and Clara H. Mulder) now out #OA in #PSP: We explore the relationship between moving distance and income returns, finding that overall, work-related movers gain more when moving across longer distances💸📈

• CALL FOR PAPERS –  2026 CPoS Special Issue “Migration Trajectories Across the Life Course” Comparative Population Studies welcomes submissions to the 2026 special issue Migration Trajectories Across the Life Course, guest edited by Sergi Vidal (Autonomous University of Barcelona), Aude Bernard (University of Queensland), and Riccardo Valente (Autonomous University of Barcelona). The proposed special issue aims to leverage a trajectory-based approach that fully accounts for the multi-dimensional nature of migration across time and space, providing deeper insights into diverse migration trajectory patterns and their long-term individual and societal implications.

When winter feels the longest, we fortunately organize our own PhD-peer workshop at BiB! The ‘wall of compliments’ – where only pep talk is allowed – was a good balance to useful and critical feedback to my paper 🙏 Thanks @eliashofmann.bsky.social and everyone else! #phdlife #populationgeography

Here's a starter pack for happiness/SWB researchers. It's a pretty small list at this point; I've mainly used profile searches, with limited results.

So, happy to add people by request.

Do motives of internal migration vary with distance? In a short report based on German panel data we find that this is the case - but that the picture is more complex than you would think 🤔 (report in German, happy to answer questions🤓)
