It's a great time to rewatch Chernobyl.

I suppose one could mount a strong originalist claim that surveilling and policing women's bodies is deeply rooted in our history and traditions . . .

If imposing that kind of surveillance sounds creepy and weird for boys but coming up with a gender verification for girls is fine because of concerns about fairness, I think we need some additional analysis to ground the distinction.

Why don't we just use arbitrary age categories as a backup/supplement and instead group boys based on pediatrician-certified Tanner scores and blood tests that determine where they are?

These disparities certainly affect more male athletes than the potential presence of trans girls affects female athletes.

A thought experiment: If we care about biological fairness, why don't we care about the (probably more firmly grounded) fact that pre-puberty boys are at a huge disadvantage with post-puberty boys in many sports?

To exclude a vanishingly small N of trans girls, we potentially subject every girl with short hair, visible musculature, large size, and/or a small chest to hostile scrutiny and suspicion.

The scrutiny falls entirely on one gender. Only girls are required to prove their lack of unfair advantage in this regard. And we've already seen a lot of ugliness with challenges to girls' participation based on perceptions that they are not feminine enough to be "real girls."

So: what is fairness? And what are you willing to sacrifice for it? Even if we concede your argument that some trans girls have advantages due to being trans, it's a very small N.

But this is where there's work to do in encouraging thought about the nature of this threat to fairness. Fairness is a really important and resonant concept! It's a positive that, for instance, it seems far more common to see people ask "but what about legacy admits?" in affirmative action debates.

I presume that both averages and medians are brought down by children who are doing rec. In gymnastics, a lot of gyms stay in business through rec volume, but there's no comparison between a season of rec and a $$$eason of team.

Yeah, it sounds like things are going really badly out there. This is tough for me to watch as a former Duck (I started my career in UO's poli sci department).

The home gymnastics training industry is really scary. Any time people ask about "should I get the junior kip bar for my 7 year old?", my response is to tell people to google "gymnastics bar peel" or "amazing coach save" on Youtube.

I do hope that our organizations will refuse to collaborate in any attempt to create definitions and litmus tests for who is Jewish. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that we can count on the first amendment to prevent such initiatives.

People need to understand that the expressed philosemitism is not about Jews as Jews in all of our glorious diversity and vigorous disagreements about everything. It's about the evangelical vision of Jews and their world-historic role in that story. Won't end well even for the supposed insiders.
