I started magic recently (2023) with proxy-friendly edh, got into cedh, still my main thing, was interested in 1v1 formats quickly but couldn’t justify the cost just to *try* a new format. Pauper was just a couple months ago my bridge into 60-card magic and wow is it fun.

Yup, all this, the ubiquity of the yapping is the part of the scene that I miss the least after moving to Japan.

Proxies, mostly. It’s a really big draw for people looking to try playing for stakes and comparing cedh versus any sanctioned format. Financial barrier to entry is just really low. Especially if you like playing with powerful cards and you’re comparing printer ink to a legacy deck.
