I’m reading through the transit funding bill in more detail today. There’s a bunch of neat stuff in here, like:

-NITA has the ability to “fast track” large projects with demonstrated local support
-NITA has some squishy authority to enforce traffic violations like blocking bus lanes or bus stops

Track 8. Reason to Believe - this is also just… fine. It’s an electric version of the original song, which is one of the best on Nebraska. So that automatically makes this good. Still, this is not a huge improvement over the demo so I could take it or leave it.

Track 7. Born in the USA - Even if the original was a big hit, it’s never been my favorite Bruce song. The synth line is too much for me. So I like this version more. It’s raw and would not at all be confused with a patriotic anthem. I recognize this would not be a hit, but that’s why I like it

Track 6. Open All Night - ok I also like this. It’s bouncy and fun. Nothing too crazy and Bruce keeps it cute. Not a huge improvement over the original demo, but I still dig it.

Track 5. Downbound Train - LOL OMG AN EVEN WORSE U-TURN THAN ATLANTIC CITY. Nothing about this track works. I love Downbound Train on Born in the USA and this version has absolutely none of what makes it good. It’s loud, fast, over the top, and a mess.

Track 4. Johnny 99 - lol this is ridiculous but I like it. Faster and livelier, very much in the vein of The River, and since that’s my favorite Bruce record, this works for me. But the tone does betray how DARK this song is. So for that alone the original Demo version is probably superior

Track 3. Mansion on the Hill - I mean, this is fine. It is kind of a nice improvement over the demo but nowhere near as impactful as track 1. I do like the organ (I love an organ).

Track 2. Atlantic City - LOL OK BIG U-TURN IN QUALITY. The tempo is odd. It absolutely loses all the atmosphere of the original. The extra instruments and backing vocals add nothing. This track makes clear why Bruce was so conflicted over these recordings.

Track 1. Nebraska - actually quite beautiful and an improvement on the demo track. The light instrumentation really expands the atmosphere of the song, and you can hear Bruce more clearly, which makes the story even more haunting and powerful. I’m surprised at how good this is.

I gotta post my reactions to listening to Bruce Springsteen’s Electric Nebraska for the first time. As a huge fan of Bruce, this shit is crazy!

IMO, the best plan to address this issue is switching to multiparty proportional representation. There’s a clear path to do it, it would reform the system in which the parties operate, and provide better representation for voters who currently support the GOP.
