Ofelia Torres, teen who fought to have her father released from ICE custody, dies from rare cancer Ofelia Torres, 16, died on Friday from Stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, her father's lawyer confirmed.

A child dying of cancer spent her final days fighting to free her wrongfully detained father from ICE custody.
Β
This comes just weeks after a mother from Maryland was denied the right to be at her son’s side as he died from cancer.

Not one dime for this cruelty.

Nobody is above the law. With this order, we are putting ICE on notice in our city. Chicago is leading the way as the first city to create infrastructure for holding ICE and CBP agents accountable for crimes against our communities.

IG screenshot, caption reads:

I’m Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, and I’m running for State Central Committee in the 9th Congressional District.

Recently, my image was used β€” without my permission β€” in a campaign mailer supporting a federal candidate who is also my opponent for State Central Committee. The mailer was sent by Elect Chicago Women which is reportedly linked to AIPAC.

It falsely suggested that I endorsed that candidate.

I did not.

I proudly endorsed State Representative Hoan Huynh for Congress.

Using someone’s image to imply an endorsement that doesn’t exist misleads voters. That’s not how democracy should work.

Today, my attorney issued a cease and desist distribution of this communication, or any other use of my name or image.

Voters deserve honesty. And I will always stand up to protect it.

NOTICE TO CEASE AND DESIST

Dear Ms. Williams,
This firm represents Alderperson Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth. It has come to our attention that Elect Chicago Women is using, without permission, the image of Alderperson Manaa-Hoppenworth in an electioneering communication supporting the candidacy of Laura Fine, a candidate for nomination to the office of United States Representative. A copy of the communication is attached. This is a blatantly misleading advertisement, in that it clearly implies that Alderperson Manaa-Hoppenworth, a respected public official, is endorsing Ms. Fine’s candidacy, a falsehood of which your committee, with the least amount of due diligence, should have been aware. We can come to no other conclusion that you have either intentionally misrepresented Alderperson Manaa-Hoppenworth’s position, or have proceeded with a reckless disregard of the truth.

You are directed immediately to cease distribution of this communication, or any other use of Alderperson Manaa-Hoppenworth’s name or image. In the event that you do not accede to this directive, we will seek all appropriate remedies under federal and Illinois law.

Sincerely,
Michael C. Dorf

More super PAC conflict: @leniann.bsky.social just posted to IG that her lawyer sent a cease/desist to Elect Chicago Women demanding it stop using her image in mailers supporting Laura Fine for Congress, which was done without her permission. LMH is backing Hoan Huynh in IL-9.

I hope Dems begin to see that moderate or progressive, AIPAC is not our friend.

They endorse January 6th insurrectionists. Yet if you so much as suggest the US uphold its own Leahy laws, no matter your record, they will work against you.

Twin Cities tow truck driver returns abandoned vehicles to families after ICE arrests Juan Leon sends a "chase" car to check out where abandoned vehicles are located and arranges discreet drop-offs. Since late December, he estimated they have dropped off 250 cars.

ICE has grabbed so many people from their vehicles that there are abandoned cars across Minnesota.

This tow truck driver returns the cars for free as a public service, and he’s been getting death threats.

They hate the helpers.

Which is why must keep helping.

Our founders, though deeply flawed, understood that democracy requires an informed citizenry and a government accountable to it people. That’s why the press is the only profession protected by the Constitution. It’s also why autocrats and oligarchs seek to control and destroy it.

Virginia’s New Governor Ends ICE Program. Local Contracts Remain, For Now. - Bolts Abigail Spanberger left the 287(g) program, which empowered state law enforcement to detain immigrants. Will Democrats also bar local police and sheriffs from the program?

NEW: Abigail Spanberger this afternoon ordered that all state agencies leave ICE's 287(g) program.

This means that the state police (and some other agencies) will no longer be empowered to detain and arrest people for ICE.

Big, big move by the governor within weeks of coming into office.
