Thanks for enabling this discussion! Because impact can mean different things to different people—or at least the paths will be different—we put ‘purpose’ as a core element in our book and framework. We recommend to define this for yourself, and design your ‘strategy’ around that.

If you use social media for research impact, how do you define success? For example, are you most interested in sharing findings with colleagues/the world, attracting readers, discussing work, getting media coverage, securing a TED talk invite or something else? Do you have specific goals?

I just published my first blog post. I thought it would be fitting to start by writing about my very first academic publication. What began as a background review turned into a research journey.

I’d say that the innovation ‘ecosystem’ is becoming the main unit of analysis. And of course, AI will have big influence.

I presented some background and the main framework of the book, which we call the Researcher’s Social Media Compass—comprising the elements Purpose, Presence, Platform, Personality, and Practice—which we hope will help scholars navigate the dynamic world of social media.

• On the back—besides your name: number 12, symbolizing the additional “twelfth player”—the community. To me, it represents the global Open Innovation community you’ve built.

• On the front: Brainport Eindhoven—a tribute to the ecosystem you helped inspire. And I dare say there would be no “Brainport” without Open Innovation.

But Henry, beyond the theory and recognition, what truly stands out is you—your humility, generosity, and deep sense of community.
Which brings me to this.
This is the latest away jersey of PSV Eindhoven, our local football club.

And your former student, Carlos Moedas, as European Commissioner, launched an entire policy framework based on Open Science, Open Innovation, and Open to the World. It really doesn’t get more impactful than that!

What’s remarkable is how widely your ideas have been adopted. Philips, for example, quite literally had your book in hand when opening up the High Tech Campus—one of the sparks that ignited what we now proudly call the Brainport ecosystem.

You challenged the closed R&D model and introduced a new mindset—embracing collaboration across organizational and disciplinary boundaries. Your thinking transformed the field of innovation management, and its influence extends into fields such as economics, public policy, and engineering.

You are best known as the “Father” of Open Innovation, a term you coined in your seminal book in 2003. While many concepts are born in academia, few actually reshape how the world innovates. Yours did.

This is a moment to reflect, to celebrate, and above all, to recognize your extraordinary impact—on academia, business, policy, and society.

It’s a true honor and personal privilege to stand here today as your honorary promotor.

The honorary doctorate award ceremony was for me personally a true highlight. I will put my speech in the comments below, which also explains why there is a PSV jersey with Brainport Eindhoven (@brainporteindhoven.bsky.social) in the picture.

...followed by a couple of other great talks and a panel to discuss various examples and aspects of the changing role of the university as orchestrator of the local ecosystem to enable systemic change while addressing societal challenges.

It was a great day, starting with a plenary session, in which I presented some perspectives of the 4th Generation University...

During this year's TU/e Research Day, I had the great honor and pleasure to offer an honorary doctorate to Henry Chesbrough on behalf of Eindhoven University of Technology (‪@tue.nl‬).

Brabantse Wal Marathon: My 5th marathon distance (including the 50k run last March), my 3th official marathon race, and my 1st ever trail run. I really enjoyed the trail nature of the run, although it was quite tough on the legs. Official time just over 5 hours, 5:00:30. 😅
