I don't love the way you're talking to me. Again, my solution which you don't like is regulate Amazon. Also, it's just not a profession most people can make a living off of, so have a day job. I've already explained why I think having people tip at libraries is bad.

Fine, but asking for tips at libraries is not "burning the system down." It's destroying one of the few places in our society where people can go for free and have dignity. That's worth protecting, sorry!

But also, the reality is a lot of authors have to have day jobs. I do, and I still make time for my writing. That might be what the rest of my life looks like and I'm ok with that because I love writing.

Where did i say that? No. See above. I am one of them. Again, forcing Amazon to pay authors more fairly *would* go a long way. It's true they didn't used to exist, but now they're a giant in the industry, and if govt forced more fair treatment, authors would make more money.

There is an important societal good in keeping the library a free space. It's one of its defining features.

Because tipping situations quickly turn into a norm everyone feels required to do. Because a kid will look up at their mom and say, we really loved our book, why aren't we giving money to the author? Bet. Not rolling in the dough, and I'm also a mom. And a writer.

And this would alienate the poor from the libraries, even though it's an institution they should be able to rely on and move comfortably within, with no expectation of payment.

Trying to put issues like this on small consumers (like a library tipping matching thing would do) instead of holding companies like Amazon to account will just never work.

It's gotten exponentially worse because of Amazon. The House Judiciary Committee found Amazon made up 50% of physical sales and 80% ebook. Any solution to this that doesn't address Amazon will be fruitless.

If a local police department assists ICE in kidnapping people, are they eventually going to be held criminally liable too? Accountability must happen. We can't bend the knee to fascism and police who assist are as culpable a anyone else.

Authors have to put books on Amazon, but Amazon pays them thr smallest, most meager amount for that book...so small it's criminal. Amazon is what needs to be fixed.
