I posted to Twitter for what looks like the fifth time this year yesterday. Checked back today and the post has 39,000 likes, 3.2k retweets โ and 9 replies, and 4 quote tweets. I'm sorry folks those numbers ain't real. Bordering on a statistical impossibility. It's gotta be almost entirely fake.

Jul. 7, 2025 Re the Kratsios editorial on the "Gold Standard" Executive Order John P Holdren Formerly the Science Advisor to President Obama (Jan 2009 - Jan 2017) Currently Research Professor at Havard University's Kennedy School of Government Reading the June 24 Editorial by Michael Kratsios on the โGold Standardโ can only reinforce the impression, already well established by President Trumpโs pathological prevarications, that George Orwellโs 1984 has finally arrived, 41 years late. How bizarre is it, after all, that an administration that has been cancelling crucial research projects and databases right and leftโand whose top officials lie routinely about practically everythingโhas issued a demand for more reproducible and transparent science? And now we have the Presidentโs under-qualified Science Advisor lecturing the readers of SCIENCE on what scientific integrity and transparency require. As for the โGold Standardโ Executive Order Kratsios praises, the poison pill is not hard to find (as many others have noted): the EO gives political appointees with no science background the power to declare a scientific result they donโt like is the result of โmisconductโ or some other alleged shortfall on the โgold standardโ. Aside from that, the only proposals in this EO that are sensible call for measures that both Obama and Biden implementedโand that Trump in his first term did not. And now the fox in the henhouse overseeing it all is Michael Kratsios? What a charade!
Skip the editorial by the director of Trump's Office of Science and Technology Policy on "sound science."
Read the letter by John Holdren instead: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Headline of New York Times story from May 2nd. It reads: Former Weather Service Leaders Warn Staffing Cuts Could Lead to 'Loss of Life' The former agency directors say current employees will face an "impossible task" to maintain service just as hurricane season begins.
By Camille Baker May 2, 2025 Five former National Weather Service directors have taken the unusual step of signing onto an open letter warning that cuts to the organization by the Trump administration may soon endanger lives. "N.W.S. staff will have an impossible task to continue its current level of services," they write in the letter, dated Friday. "Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life." Hundreds of Weather Service employees, or about 10 percent of the agency's total staff, have been terminated or accepted buyout offers since President Trump began his second term, according to the letter.
๐จ2 months ago, every National Weather Service Director of the last 34 years took the unprecedented step of signing a joint, open letter.
