Arthur was born in 1884 in Leeds. The Society was set up to popularise his many books (not just for children) and encourage research into his life and work. https://arthur-ransome.org/

Those who qualified for the Atlantic Star first would not have their service time counted for the 1939-1945 Star.
Confused? We are!
the Africa Star, Italy Star, or other campaign stars would receive those medals based on their service in the relevant operational areas.
Some medals may not have been issued because the seaman did not claim their entitlement from the issuing authority.
1939โ1945 Star: A minimum of 6 months afloat between 3 September 1939 & 8 May 1945. But for merchant seafarers, a specific criteria applied of at least 28 days of service at sea.
Atlantic Star required an additional 6 months of service in the Atlantic or Home Waters.

I need help finding out about #WW2 #medals for the UK merchant navy: why some people seemed to get 1939-45 star, Atlantic star, war medal & colleagues on same ship did not.

"I ain't done nuffin'"
"You were discussing the weather on social media and an asylum seeker waiting in Calais read it"
"But I'm English, of course I talk about the weather!"
"But you included a snapshot of a satellite photo..."
The actual Act isn't as broad as the graphic in my first post suggested.
The Shipping Forecast and Swallows and Amazons are safe.
Although, if you communicated anything useful from either to an asylum seeker about to board a small boat, or someone responsible for the boat, that would be illegal.

The final post (for now anyway!) in my series revisiting some of my favourite childhood books looks at Arthur Ransomeโs Winter Holiday.
Itโs lovely and sunny here today so this doesnโt feel quite as seasonal as Iโd hoped but never mind!

Maybe it's a Susan thing? Susan had to make the dinner in Swallows and Amazons as well. If I were her I'd have slipped some sedatives into Roger and Titty's cocoa just to get them to shut up.

We had a great TARS meet up in Harrogate in April last year - the 17th TARS Literary Weekend.
Did you visit Betty's Tearoom? Missed Knaresborough unless we saw it from the train.
An eastern screech owl, rufous morph, sleeping in the entrance to its nest
Two ospreys, one landing and carrying a fish, in their nest. Not shown, at least three fledglings
Two bald eagles at sunset
Something random I'm rather proud of: After finally putting together enough to obtain a telephoto lens, I've managed to find an eastern screech owl, and entire nest of ospreys, and a nesting pair of bald eagles in the span of the year!
A great-horned owl still eludes me, but maybe next year

The picture shows six needles of different sizes. They were made of bone resemble their modern descendants with an eye at one end and a tapered end.
Things used in everyday life are the real archaeological treasures! These sewing #needles were made from animal bone some 15,000 years ago. Some designs simply don't need to be improved, because form and functions were perfectly matched from the start. Form follows function! ๐งต1/2

A photo of a book page with the date 'July 3 1858' and the title 'Advice in hot weather'. A drawing of an elephant takes up most of the image, the elephant is wearing a suit and leaning back to pour a bottle of liquid into its mouth.
With summer warmth fading into memory, here are 19th Century tips for coping with a heatwave:
"Allow nothing to worry you.โ
โRefrain from reading the Debates.โ
โShun public dinners.โ
