Union endorsements can have an impact, especially in the context of an NDP leadership race. But they are largely symbolic unless backed by a massive organized effort to sign up members to join the party to vote for a specific candidate. There's no evidence of such an effort.

In Quebec, where over a quarter of USW Canada's membership resides, members are unlikely to get excited about a candidate who cannot speak French.

In the last federal election, for example, USW Canada’s President endorsed the NDP, but USW Local 1005 endorsed a Marxist-Leninist candidate in Hamilton-Mountain and Local 2251 in Sault Ste. Marie endorsed the Conservatives.
