At a time when it feels difficult to hold our leaders accountable, we need a new deal for education in California that is led by students, teachers, and school staff. A state where our public schools are fully funded, our communities are housed, and our children inherit a livable planet.

Honored to earn the endorsement of the Wellstone Progressive Democrats of Sacramento, a chapter of Our Revolution.

Thank you for the endorsement and these words: “We need a leader with the vision and grit to ensure our students and educational system thrive and Nichelle is that leader.”

That starts with tangible steps like expanding dual enrollment, increasing mental health resources, implementing universal pre-K, reducing class sizes, restoring arts and electives, and reforming standardized testing. There is so much more we can do for our students and teachers.

California’s schools sit at the intersection of safety, civil rights, and opportunity. My north star is that every student should feel safe, seen, and supported, and graduate with real choices for college, career, or both.

I’ve been teaching for 30 years, and as someone teaching future teachers and overseeing nine colleges serving 200,000 students each year, I’m seeing that the problems they face today are the same ones I faced in the classroom.

As the only Democratic teacher in this race, and if elected, the first Black woman to be State Superintendent, I’m honored to have his endorsement in this fight for California’s students and teachers.

When young leaders like Triston Ezidore step up, it gives me hope for public education’s future. From student body president to the youngest School Board President in the US, and the first Black, gay man to serve on his board, he’s proving what’s possible when lived experience meets purpose.

Imposter syndrome is real, but you never know what you can do until you do it. That was true during my time on the statewide bargaining team and my 6 years on the statewide representation team.

Flashback — can’t believe it’s been over a decade since I joined the California Faculty Association at Cal State LA.

I’ve made lifelong friends while being part of impactful work. I’m especially grateful for the experiences that led me to serve as Chapter Vice President and Faculty Rights Chair.

I support the law and will ensure its implementation stays teacher-led and classroom-informed. As State Superintendent, I’ll make sure professional development is paid and shaped by educators, not one-size-fits-all mandates.

The headline is a little overstated. California’s new literacy law doesn’t “change how kids learn to read” overnight, but it does add phonics-based reading training and new K–8 textbooks. Teachers already teach phonics, but there’s often no funding attached for training.

Every year I meet students who are scared to be themselves, and this year that fear feels heavier. The people in power should be protecting them, not making them targets.

National Coming Out Day means standing up for our kids when it’s hardest. I’m not backing down from that.

I opposed AB 715 because it weaponizes vague definitions to chill speech and censor Ethnic Studies. We can fight antisemitism and protect academic freedom at the same time. As the only classroom teacher in this race, I’ll always stand for truth, inclusion, and free inquiry in our schools.

Hi, I was the first and only candidate to stand with fellow teachers in opposing AB 715, going all the way back to when it was AB 1468. The State Superintendent would be responsible for enforcing the bill now that it’s been signed by the Governor, which makes this race especially important.
