When Farmers Gambled on Diversity: How Neolithic Communities in the Rhineland Transformed Their Fields A new archaeobotanical study reveals how early European farmers shifted from einkorn and emmer to a more flexible, risk-spreading crop strategy nearly 7,000 years ago.

New study of 7,000-year-old seeds in Germany shows Neolithic farmers expanded beyond einkorn & emmer, betting on barley & naked wheat to spread risk. Early agriculture was dynamic, not static. #Archaeology #Neolithic #Anthropology #FarmingHistory www.anthropology.net/p/when-farme...

In many places in the book, I was reminded of the works of Daniela Hofmann or Martin Furholt, whom she also quotes. Stefanie Samida takes a similar stance in her German-language book “Molekularbiologie und Archäologie. Eine ungewöhnliche Beziehung.”.

Anna Källèn's The Trouble with Ancient DNA is a great read. She convincingly argues that #Archaeogenetics are often falsely portrayed as a 'neutral machine where unbiased truths about ancient people (...) come straight out of bone powder.'

Although it may not be a "looker," it is one of the few proofs that bronze was cast in the Northern Rhine Region during the Bronze Age. Thanks to my colleague Markus, who had a closer look and realised this is not a stone like any other. 😜

‘It’s resurrection’: 1,000-year-old seeds could grow ancient plants in England’s ice-age ghost ponds An expert team are resurrecting ice age ponds and finding rare species returning from a ‘perfect time capsule’

This nature restoration project in Norfolk sounds great. I wonder if they're cooperating with archaeologists/ethnobotanists.

Razor Blade made of bronze.

Razor Blade made of bronze.

Ladyshaver? LVR-ABRs find of the month September is an early Iron Age razor blade found as grave good in a woman’s grave at Bergheim-Paffendorf. One more example that the issue of gendered gave goods is not straightforward. #archaeology #gender #stereotypes

If you’re into walking & archaeology, check out the Planlauf Terrain App, which offers high-resolution LiDAR data & GPS positioning. Perfect for exploring earthworks (e.g. @megalithic.bsky.social) while hiking or surveying. At least in forested regions. 😉

New temporal dimensions of the Linearbandkeramik cemetery horizon in Schwetzingen (Germany) | Antiquity | Cambridge Core New temporal dimensions of the Linearbandkeramik cemetery horizon in Schwetzingen (Germany)

New paper! Were cemeteries of the LBK long-lived, starting in the east and spreading westwards slowly? Our new 14C dates suggest they started contemporaneously across the LBK and were fairly short-lived (though this depends on what you mean by "short"...) www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

An unusual but very meaningful task: my colleagues uncovered a British WWII aircraft near Kerpen-Manheim.

Archaeological data should be accessible but also beautifully visible! The sdsbrowser by @clemensschmid.archaeo.social.ap.brid.gy & (#rstats) does a very good job showcasing lithic data. You can download, but also use a table view, plots & diagrams to get a 1st impression. 👍 sds.ufg.uni-kiel.de

I'm pleased to announce that earlier this year Nadia's and my PhD theses on the #Linearbandkeramik site of Arnoldsweiler have been published. 🎉 Arnoldsweiler is a remarkable Early #Neolithic settlement in western Germany with a well, a ditched enclosure, & a cemetery. Comments & reviews are welcome.
