The Republicans would like to have some freedom from Trump, but they won’t until we bring him down in popularity. That happened with Bush in 2005. It happened with Trump in 2017. When it happens, I am hopeful that our Republican colleagues will resume working with us. And I talk to them. One of the places is in the gym. When you’re on that bike in your shorts, panting away next to a Republican, a lot of the inhibitions come off.

A lot of delusion happening in that Schumer NYT interview, but this gets to the heart of it: he believes his Republican colleagues will come around and everything will be ok. Absolutely delusional.

This take was banal and naive during Trump's first term. It is no more insightful now.

Fixing this will take many parallel solutions, including elections. The people advocating for this are not ignorant of this, so don't be so arrogant as to treat them that way.

Trump is a convicted felon who stole classified documents and tried to do a coup and the NYT never called on him to drop out. Ridiculous

We know AT LEAST 2 men on the SCOTUS have accepted massive bribes.
We know AT LEAST 2 men on the SCOTUS have committed sexual assault.
We know one seat was stolen from a Democratic president by partisan extremism.
We know one judge was only wholly unqualified and placed for her youth and religion.

Pure luck of when I randomly checked. (Or destiny? dun dun DUNNN)

Now the countdown for 2,000! Good luck with the rest of the Kickstarter, but its success is definitely well deserved rather luck.

Although I have to add a reminder to go back and check my Pledge level after I see how next month's finances look. Not teaching this summer and only working one job is a stretch, but the pledge levels are all a great value with good stuff! 🤔

This is a wonderful series about an Alt-History of women in Apollo-era space exploration. Even if you haven't read any of it yet this is a great place to start!

I had it bookmarked to pledge sometime, but seeing the count at 999, I needed to get in there now and claim 1000th backer status!! 😎

The strangely American idea that we deserve all the bad things that happen to us (because, God) is up there with racism as the reason why there's so much push back here about having a gov that actually invests in creating a prosperous, safe, and stress-free society

I like Gretchen Whitmer but every single Democratic candidate must answer how they are winning over Black voters or they are incapable of winning the primary, let alone the general. I don’t know why I keep having to say this every cycle since 2008 but for some reason white people aren’t listening 🙃

This was one of the favorite tactics of southern segregationists governments. It’s why freedom riders buses were bombed and so many organizers were disappeared and murdered. It’s ‘good’ (effective) if the state’s goal is to let civilians do the dirty work of eliminating dissident

Good short thread (go click thru and read it), but this post is worth extra highlighting because it so blatantly shows how real estate is can be seen as a solid investment and employees are not.

And if you read that and thought, "Well, that's true. What's the problem?" You are the problem.

A phenomenon that galls me:

*continues to spend time on a toxic, miserable social platform*

*constantly screenshots example of the toxicity and misery*

*brings screenshots over here because we were just dying to know how it was going*

Imagine the deep moral vacuity you'd have to have to use the phrase "shouldn't have" here. Like it was somehow WRONG or IMMORAL for creative people to get paid for their work. Work that OpenAI has pirated to fuel their immoral, unethical machine. Deeply, deeply repugnant worldview.

It's really weird to see these posts about Linda keep popping up and I still don't know quite how to talk about her. But she called me a couple months ago and made me promise I'd tell the truth when everyone started saying nice things. 1/?

Why do you have to bring that up in this joyful thread celebrating 80's schlock?!

If he'd just... *sniffle* ... just accepted his fate and *sniffle* not helped them it would've been ... puh-puh-painless! 😭😭😭

On that note:

Trans authors (I mean authors who are trans, NOT cis people who write about trans people), drop your book links here and I'll try to repost as many as I can throughout the day.

Cis people: Repost trans authors' book links.

1/ Reminder that violent crime has gone down since the 1960s, and wage theft and civil asset forfeiture have gone up since the 1980s. Cops stole more property than burglars stole in the last five years. More money is lost to wage theft than lost to all violent crimes for the last five years.

Wow, this would be immature in kindergarten.

But an elected state lawmaker, doing this for months, shows just how sad and pathetic the Republican party is.

They are cruel because they are bullies and enjoy it. Nothing any more profound than that. Just pitiful, boring-ass bullies given power.

Absolutely, utterly agree. Plus it devalues the actual, scientific AI work that's been quietly going on for decades.

On the art side, I like how "plagiarism machines" is become a more common term. For LLMs like ChatGPT, maybe "bullshitting machines" might be a better term than AI.

I hadn't heard of these categories before, but they're pretty great (and bit of fun with "hard and soft" BS - personally I don't want to step in either! 😉), and 1000% spot on analysis of ChatGPT and why it is so terrible at what people are trying to sell it as able to do.
