When you make an offhand lore comment and your players latch onto it like a like an angry dog. Entire sessions freehanded because they are doing (insert unplanned for yet inevitable action here) and will not be dissuaded.

I did the meeting on a ship option. Session zero ended with some RP on said ship so the characters could get to know each other. Session one started with them waking on a beach, the party as the only survivors from the wreck. They were all headed to the same city, so travelling together was a given.

Earth worm or centipede. Earth worm could be an encounter you have to plan out so you can kill it before it burrows and flees. The centipede could be a tanky roaming mini boss that shrugs off most attacks. Give both good drops for incentives.

The friendship between our war veteran wizard and our rich bard with the sheltered upbringing. These characters were allies of necessity but have genuinely come to trust and rely on each other. The inventive teamwork now is a challenge to keep up with as a DM.

Gamora Goblin rolls off the tongue so nicely! I love the mini, the paint job and I think the personality would play well in game.

Grounded 2, final update, Tarantula Buggy!!! (Please)

This campaign had a session zero and led to two rules for this campaign: a largely sexless setting (like LOTR) where even sexual references keep to a minimum. No children are put in direct danger. Blanket danger (whole town vs monster) fine. Children are safe/hiding. Done and done, everyone's happy.

To me, session zero is primarily for making sure you have a game setup that everyone will enjoy. It's a time to discuss expectations and wants for the campaign while also laying down boundaries.

We play in person and use phones and tablets for character sheets. I've luckily got a group that actively avoids metagaming and will directly ask if their character would be familiar with a monster. Allows plans to go wrong and characters to learn on the go for better stories.
