In antiquity, there was a popular Greek expression known as “tria kappa kakista” essentially “the three bad k’s”: this refers to Cilicia, Cappadocia, and Crete. These regions were notorious for producing brigands, mercenaries, pirates, and other “lowly“ professions.

110: Ptolemaic Egypt - Two's Company, Three's a Crowd
The tripartite division of power between Ptolemy VI, Ptolemy VIII, and Cleopatra II proves shaky, and the Romans are called to handle one of the most dysfunctional families in antiquity.

Great Conqueror or Brutal Butcher? Alexander's Mixed Reputation.
Conqueror or Brutal Butcher? Alexander's Mixed Reputation. I poke a bit at the vexed dichotomy of Alexander's position in history. Also, the tendency to knock him down a peg because he can't really be "all that." But he's not someone to emulate. #classicsbluesky #ancientbluesky #alexanderthegreat

I hope you've enjoyed the newest episode!
Next time, we'll return to Egypt to see how Ptolemy VI, Ptolemy VIII, and Cleopatra II recover from their near-destruction in the Sixth Syrian War: by immediately plotting to oust each other out of power. Did you expect anything less?
Stay tuned!

Hephaistion Wasn't Alexander's Arm Candy!
At his death, #Hephaistion was 2nd man in the empire--a far cry from just a sounding board or love interest. Pop history renditions often don't know what to do with him, outside romantic rivalries. Hephaistion's real rivals? *Other marshals*.

Promotional graphic for "Crip Authority: Disability and the Art of Consolation in the Renaissance" by Elizabeth B. Bearden from University of Michigan Press. The book's two-toned peach cover sits on the left, with a centred old bronze coin, perhaps depicting a disabled figure. To the right of the cover is an endorsement from Marina Brownlee from Princeton University, who writes "Crip Authority offers and profound and powerful contribution to the dignity and authority of disabilities. It will provide a very welcome contribution to several disciplines through its fresh, brilliant, and new insights." Beneath this is the University of Michigan Press logo.
Pre-order "Crip Authority" today - Bearden explores how Renaissance writers used disabilities to transform consolatory literature into empowerment, challenging authority over time. bit.ly/4mUJHCo
