pleasantly surprised that writing along to the soundtracks of city-building computer games like Age of Empires and Sierra's Pharaoh - games I played non-stop as a kid - unlocks some instinctual hyper-productivity that adulthood had buried

It's great to see the publication of the second paper from our "queer pollies" project exploring the social media harassment of LGBTQIA+ politicians during the 2022 Australian federal election.

It's also Open Access!

The President's son then speaks on Fox! Power! Legitimacy! Why pretend like the right and left are on an equal playing field here?

And again, "[a]lready, both the far right and the far left are fuelling the flames." Fox News hosts "guest after guest blaming the left", and MSNBC (apparently the bastion of the far left?) hosts "at least one commentator."

Why are these presented like the same thing? In proportion and misinfo?

In the endless bothsiderisms of political violence, you're sanitising the fact that perpetrators of this violence are mostly ideologically aligned with one of these sides

The article digs in even further in it's summary of Jan 6. The "hard right" and "hard left" (lol) of the States disagree as to Trump's role of inciting violence in the capital, but then the rioters are discussed like some third party, as if they are not made up of that same "hard right."

It's on the reader to decide whether "both" sides are culpable in fomenting violence, as if one set of remarks isn't /literally/ demonstrating that. It would be good if the ABC was a little clearer on that.

...significant difference in the tone and delivery of the illustrative quotes. Two college girls quipping to camera versus two intense threats of violence ("...for the liberals, it's war motherf*ckers") are presented with no further analysis.

Trump analysis aside - which in is broadly fine - I find the "dangerous threats and ghoulish celebrations" subheading disingenous and misleading. The reactions to Kirk's death are not split down the binary of promised retribution versus celebratory, but there is also a...

A bitter blame game is pushing the US towards the precipice In a country with more guns than people, an increasingly violent and threatening public discourse is creating serious dangers.

Just because the Trump administration frames this violence in an existential ideological divide (e.g. "real" Americans versus the radical left) it doesn't mean that news sources (particularly outside of the States!) should engage in the same rhetoric.

Vance goes after NYC mayor hopeful Mamdani for not showing ‘gratitude’ to the US ‘I don’t know the guy but my sense is that he has had a very good life in this country,’ said Vance on Zohran Mamdani

probably says something about Vance that public service is not, in his opinion, an expression of gratitude

why the bending over backwards to sift through the detritus in search of "goodwill", but pro-Palestinian marches are anti-semetic unless proven otherwise?

if Trump can reframe an illegal invasion into a 50/50 scrap then every country with a significant security alliance with the states should be having a very close re-read of their agreement obligations. Is it in Pillar I or II? asking for a friend

Thank you for parsing this. It remains frustrating that people are still so enamoured with the idea of a one and done injectable prevention dose, rather than the more realistic behavioural and social changes needed to eradicate a disease.

I'm crashing out over the choice of language around campus safety - clearly insinuating Palestinian solidarity camps are inherently antisemitic without outright saying so. "Antisemitism...has become ingrained and normalised witin academia and the cultural space." Just an enormous claim to throw out

A screenshot of the ASECA report, reading, quote, "Importantly, universities must embrace cultural change to end their tolerance for antisemitic conduct. What tolerance? Genuine question - what university in this country is protecting staff who "promote antisemitic rhetoric or harassment of Jewish students"?

A text screenshot from the Australian Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, reading, quote, "Antisemitism is evident within schools and universities and has become ingrained and normalised within academia and the cultural space. We need to resolve this urgently. We are on a dangerous trajectory where young people raised on a diet of disinformation and misinformation about Jews today
risk becoming fully-fledged antisemites tomorrow." End quote.

In academia, we're expected to critically engage with available research, or to conduct our own, in order to substantiate an argument.

This is a deeply serious accusation that is not at all self-evident, and I would expect the ASECA to be held to similar standards.
