I'll go to my grave maintaining that the Emily Thornberry flag incident was worse than this. At least Brown actually called her a bigot, Thornberry didn't do anything but the press manufactured a controversy and Labour just completely shit the bed.

I think the middle ground is just "if you come here legally and contribute you're more than welcome, if you don't you can fuck off". I'm willing to stomach performative cruelty on the latter (small boats, foreign criminals) if it is used in defence of the former, but Labour aren't doing that well.

I am morbidly curious to hear someone explain precisely how progressives are practically meant to maintain strict message discipline amongst the several hundred million people worldwide who a) speak English, b) have an internet connection, and c) have vaguely progressive views.

What I find so strange is that I've become more small-c conservative over the years. I've come to support free-trade, free-enterprise, fiscal discipline, law and order.
