Keeping the ground water level low for farming has driven this process: oxygen reaches the plant remains and oxidation releases CO2 and causes the peatland to subside.
Until 10-20 years ago, the response was to lower the water level even more, but that's a vicious circle.

Subsidence in times of sea level rise: Not a great development. Dutch peatlands (9% of the country) subsided by 35 cm in 50 years. That's 7 mm/year. Sea level rise here is now ~3 mm/year, and accelerating.
So these peatlands (often already below sea level) sink by 1 cm/year relative to sea level.

Het zou misschien goed zijn als zijn tegenspelers alvast wijzen op dit mogelijke scenario en de noodzaak om het niet over incidenten maar over structurele zaken te hebben. Dan komen ze minder in de verdediging als zo'n incident inderdaad plaatsvindt.
