Classical Archaeology Lecture!
The UNB Department of Historical Studies and the Classical Association of Canada Present:

The Rich Athenian Lady was Pregnant: New Discoveries about the Richest Tomb in Prehistoric Athens

Dr. Maria Liston, University of Waterloo

Advances in archaeological and analytical techniques can often add new insights into what we know about old fields. An early Iron Age burial in Athens, the tomb of the "Rich Athenian Lady" was extensively studies and published when it was discovered in the 1960s. However, the study of cremated human remains was in its infancy at the point, and burned remains received little attention. Reexamination of the human bones from this tomb revealed tiny cremated remains of a pre-term fetus, and additional information about the Rich Athenian Lady herself. These discoveries help us to better understand the context of this remarkable burial.

A poster for a theatrical production of Aristophanes' the Frogs:

You and your students are warmly invited to attend next week's performances of Aristophanes' Frogs, a modern twist on an ancient classic starring students, recent grads, and even faculty from Historical Studies and beyond. In this comic extravaganza, the wine-god Dionysus and his unpaid intern Xanthias embark on a heroic journey to bring a rock-and-roll icon back to life. Theyโ€™ll tangle with actual heroes, cross the river Styx, face terrifying monsters and sweet-singing hippies, and finally make it to Club Underworld for an epic showdown between Elvis Presley and David Bowie. Itโ€™s Ancient Greek myth like youโ€™ve never seen it before! Oh, and did we mention there are frogs?

Date: March 21 and 22
Time: 7:30pm (doors at 7pm)
Place: Memorial Hall, UNB
Absolutely free!
