A Nauticat 44 is docked at the Olympia Yacht Club on a pleasant summer day. The sky is blue with some high, puffy clouds. The sailboat owner is working on the engine and making other repairs during one of the year's lowest tides. The boat is named Blue Heron. Fitting for Olympia. There is a heron rookery directly across Budd Inlet from the OYC. In all my decades of boating and spending time on the Puget Sound waterfront, I had never seen a boat drydocked in that location. There is a large metal plate installed on the shore of Budd Inlet. The boat was resting on that while the owner made his repairs. He sailed away when high tide returned. Very Cool. ⛵

As I turned the corner on my run, I was surprised (kinda shocked) to see a boat docked here at low tide.

Budd Inlet on a crystal clear summer Tuesday. As seen from the Fourth Avenue Bridge in Olympia. The tide is rather low. Exposing sand & rocks in the water near the blue heron rookery to the left and the main body of Budd Inlet to the right. Abandoned train tracks and the Rainbow Bridge run through the inlet. The Port of Olympia lumber yard is in the background.

Actually, not terrible in the least.

Seeing a sailboat drydocked there certainly was stunning. I had never seen that in decades along the Olympia waterfront.

It was rather interesting to watch as a sailor myself.

And, it was safe. The owner simply sailed away when the tide rose.

The stunner, and a 1st, was seeing a boat drydocked on the steel plate installed on the shore.

The owner was under the stern doing repairs.

I was commenting on never seeing a sailboat in this location during low tide. Extreme low tides are generally occurring at the same rate as usual.

Climate change could lead to higher tides.

And, as you have witnessed, less snow in the mountains.
