Similar. I have good memories of the blackouts because of the excitingly uncanny moment looking out the door and everywhere was in darkness. Also it felt like camping at home. House lit with candles, tea made on a Bunsen burner. Was probably less fun for my parents!

I remember our Calor gas heater and holding slices of bread up the element to toast them during blackouts (seemed like regular events in the 80s but might be a false memory)

Exactly this. I did it 93-96 and while I can’t say I enjoyed it at that age it did give me an initial understanding of an important practical facet of our modern life, some of which stuck with me. I’ve never forgotten to “plough back profits”
