I took this photo over a decade ago - I reworked it as a painting & as I did the story unfolded. Many, many, moons ago, the rain fell every year for ten years on the night of Trick or Treating. The weather was spoiling Halloween fun. Twyla, a little witch that was forever young in heart and spirit loved Halloween and determined to stop the rain. The little witch journeyed to Jack by the Cobweb Tree to remove the curse haunting the holiday. Jack had the ability to grant one wish. The wish granted would always have some unique requirement. After traveling for many days by broomstick, Twylia found Jack. The little witch asked her wish: that Halloween would always have clear night skies with stars twinkling above. Jack declared it would be so, but she would have to give up her broomstick. In return he would give her a magical umbrella, the Star Canopy. If every year on the night of Halloween Twylia would open it and walk the evening, then Halloween would have beautiful skies with twinkling stars. Twylia agreed and her wish was granted. So now Trick or Treaters have a night of special magic walking under the stars on Halloween

Saguaro In The Desert Abstract. Digitally created in the warm colors of the southwest; rosy mountains, burnished sand, endless glowing sky and a single Saguaro cactus placed in the foreground to emphasize what can be a place of desolation. These days it takes longer to get to the true, undeveloped desert in places like Arizona. When I lived there three decades ago it was a relatively short car ride north to find the open spaces, mountains and cactus growing wild. Today, much of that land is covered in urban sprawl.

I have a fascination with these rare, very high-altitude noctilucent or night shining clouds (NLC) hanging at the edge of space with an electric blue glow, can’t be mistaken when these beautiful luminous blue-white tendrils are spreading across the sky. Here they appear in orange sunset afterglow over the Salish Sea. They’re composed of very small water ice crystals formed on minute particles of dust, possibly of cosmic origin from micrometeors. They are visible in the northern hemisphere at latitudes between 45˚and 65˚north, and occur after sunset or before sunrise from mid June to the end of July here at our latitude (47°).
