Can expression of a peptide lead to antimicrobial resistance? Yes it can!

We discovered this for a toxin we work with and started exploring how #peptides, #antimicrobialresistance and de-novo gene birth can come together.

Small proteins and peptides conferring protection against antimicrobial compounds The secretion of antimicrobials is widespread among microorganisms, many of which have developed protection mechanisms. While well-characterized protection mechanisms involve relatively large proteins – such as exporters or compound- or target-modifying…

β€˜Dark proteins’ hiding in our cells could hold clues to cancer and other diseases The human genome encodes potentially thousands of tiny proteins that were previously overlooked. The search is on to find out what they do.

Out now! We consolidated >600 Dutch yeast and characterised their activity against spoilage yeasts and relevant human and plant pathogens, focusing on yeasts that secrete antifungal proteins. Great resource for biocontrol and beyond.
