There were 115 prisoners mistakenly released in the final year of the last Conservative Government alone.

Interesting that it only becomes a major national scandal the second these releases can be blamed on a Labour government

The extraordinary thing about Tuesday's welfare reform vote is it felt, albeit perhaps just fleetingly, like the fraught and chaotic parliamentary rows about Brexit.

Or even the bumpy moments for Boris Johnson and Liz Truss."

Causing the death of tens of thousands during a pandemic...
Having to resign after 44 days as PM...
Misleading the Queen and unlawfully proroguing Parliament...

All of them "bumpy moments", apparently.

Thanks, Chris. Thanks, Henry. Top insight.

Imagine if a referendum were held in which 52% of those who voted declared that the Earth was flat.

And that subsequently everyone in the UK was forced to behave as if the Earth was indeed flat, and all main parties said "Ok, flat it is. Evidence be damned."

That's Brexit.

Reminder: it is 2025.

Today's 25 year olds didn't get a chance to vote on Brexit.

(Actually the cut-off is in 1998 but "this century" is easier to remember.)

Amazing. Lutnick says they tariffed Heard & McDonald Is. to close a loophole.

He thinks, to avoid a tariff, Australia would actually ship millions of tonnes of cargo 4000km south to the Antarctic, to an island with penguins & no infrastructure.

These people have no business near government.

Trade and the current account 2.54 The forecast assumes continued weak growth in trade volumes over the coming years. Exports fell 2.2 per cent in 2024, but we expect the level of exports to recover in 2025 and growth to average 0.8 per cent a year over 2026 to 2029. Imports rose 1.6 per cent in 2024, but we expect the level to stabilise in 2025 and growth to average 1.0 per cent over 2026 to 2029. Weak growth in imports and exports over the medium term partly reflect the continuing impact of Brexit, which we expect to reduce the overall trade intensity of the UK economy by 15 per cent in the long term.12 Our central forecast does not explicitly account for the impact of recently announced tariff increases by the US and other countries. In Box 2.2, we explore alternative scenarios assessing how different US and global trade policies could impact the UK economy.

🚨NEW OBR forecast released with the Spring Statement says Brexit is expected to reduce the overall trade intensity of the UK economy by 15% in the long term.

Trying to grow the economy under these conditions is like driving with the handbrake on.

Royal Society decides not to take disciplinary action against Elon Musk Exclusive: Fellows argue Musk has violated code of conduct but council believes investigation β€˜could do more harm than good’

I’m finding it very hard to understand the stance of the Royal Society here. Science is part of society, not separate from it, existing in some strange metaphysical bubble. I look across the Atlantic, aghast at the damage being done to science and scientists.

I note with interest right-wing media's total absence of any concerns about prominent BBC presenter Armstrong expressing his highly political opinions. As was always perfectly clear to many of us, the problem was not that Lineker had views, but the fact they didn't approve of his views.

I would like to see a few British broadcasters read out every word of Trump’s latest β€˜statement’ live on air & then remind us of their often lavish statements of support for him & then share some of their supportive words for Ukraine.

And then we can all watch their brains explode…

Five years on and Brexit still defines the UK economy… and will continue to - UK in a changing Europe On the fifth anniversary of the UK leaving the EU, Stephen Hunsaker takes a look at the effects Brexit has had on the UK economy.

"Ultimately, Brexit has acted as a slow puncture, subtly reshaping the UK’s economic landscape, making it more economically fragile, vulnerable to disruptions and therefore less reliable in the eyes of investors." ~AA
