Two people on my team think itโs gonna solve all problems and Iโm like, dude, itโs Synapse wrapped in a Power BI interface with a crappier version of Unity Catalog. Itโs not even remotely original. Itโll be rebranded within 5 years

Which one?? ๐ they both say theyโre the money saver if you talk to a sales rep. Which my executives did ๐คฆโโ๏ธ

Thatโs the appeal, now that were rebranded as part of an AI and automation team. But my data team is still focused on engineering pipelines and defining data models first. I think Unity Catalog is the real game changer for us, and Iโve yet to see Snowflake or Fabric look better ๐คทโโ๏ธ

Definitely not obvious! The IN operator requires a record set. This can be a list of values (implicit VALUES statement there) or a nested query. So we have to expand the JSON list into a record set using UNNEST, basically. In SQL Server (my stack), itโs very cumbersome syntax like a lateral join ๐ฉ

For the Snowflake fanboys, why?
For Databricks lovers, why?
โ๏ธ reached out to our management and now leadership is like, good for AI, easier for less technical people, and cheaper. Right as my team is partnering with Databricks ๐คทโโ๏ธ

If there are any Linux sys admins out there with cloud exp, I have a lead on a good paying, good benefits, union job if you donโt mind living around Sacramento, CA.
Hit me up, if interested. I know the job market can be brutal, and Iโd love to have good talent come to our town.

Map with title "Waggle Dance" and subtitle "Daily commuting patterns in Manchester". Against an orange background a large elongated hexagon forms the main map area. Within it are 59 smaller polygon regions and within each of those 59 small coloured polygons coloured from light yellow to dark brown. Cells tend to cluster around a 'home cell', getting lighter the further from this cell. In the bottom right is explanatory text reding "How to read this map. Manchester is divided up into 'Middle Super Output Areas' (MSOAs). There are 59 in total, each represented by a larger 'cell' in the map.\n\nWithin each cell there are a further 59 small cells, again representing the 59 MSOAs.\n\nEach small cell is coloured by the numbers of commuters who live in the MSOA of the larger cell and work in the the smaller cell.\n\nWhile most people live and work in the same MSOA we see more commuting from a wider area to the south of the City."
#30DayMapChallenge Day 4: Hexagon
For today's challenge I thought I'd share new technique for showing origin-destination flows using irregular hexagon (and some other polygon) layouts.
Illustrated with Manchester commuters..
All explained in this interactive:

Anyone working in data needs to speak it in SQL. Itโs the ubiquitous language we all use, or some flavor of it. Even Dataframe speak can be translated as such. So I agree, DuckDB has become my goto way to process things in Python for this very reason.

I covered all six in my first class to my work community because they wanted to understand merging, but it was entirely outside of any remote; thatโll be phase 2 to cover workflows and discuss how to collaborate since weโve got a lot of diversity in teams and tooling.
