What I would like is a little fresh well seasoned perspective.

It would be interesting to see it updated to allow housing costs not paid to equity being equally deductible (rent, mortgage interest). A lot of people would shift into itemization territory with even moderate rent payments and get the advantage of other deductions too.

I mean it's cool that it benefits me and all. But mortgage interest being tax deducible is crazy. Like we get to pay way less in taxes because we pay interest to own a (usually) appreciating asset? And it comes off our highest marginal rate? And people who rent just too bad I guess?
