Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone β€” period.

Thanks Ryan. Yes, should be tomorrow at 1:30 in Council Chambers. Anticipate a pretty low key affair.

Then the more ceremonial one will happen Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 2 pm, with a reception at 3 pm.

The Housing Strategy That Has California NIMBYs in a Corner

Here’s an article about the builder’s remedy β€œstick” approach.

I do think we need to find ways to incentivize local jurisdictions to adopt robust housing production policies. Sort of a carrot and stick approach. The financial incentives is the carrot.

There could be sticks as well, either in the form of financial ones or builders remedy.

Opinion | America’s Housing Crisis, in One Chart

I know folks have opinions about Ezra Klein, and that’s not why I’m posting this. But there’s an interesting idea in here about giving renters (and potentially homeowners) $ in jurisdictions that meet housing targets, as a way to incentivize it.

The Olivia Nuzzi Comeback Is Everything Wrong With Modern Media Olivia Nuzzi’s comeback isn’t a personal scandal storyβ€”it’s proof that today’s media rewards access, personality, and controversy more than ethics.

Full opinion piece. I think the hard part is the loss of traditional media, which wasn’t perfect, but at least tried to be objective and unbiased. And the rise of influencers who blend news and β€œjournalism” with personal branding and opinions.

Not deep into the Olivia Nuzzi story, but the description about traditional news media transitioning into social media influencers seems on point and makes sense given economics of traditional media versus social media influencers. Lot of this really started with folks like Alex Jones.

Appreciate you calling attention to this. We can’t become desensitized or resigned.

Also, fyi, Denise Louie is hoping to open a daycare across the street. And the large empty parking lot is planned for mixed-use, and both market-rate and low-income housing.

Need to work with SPD, SDOT, local businesses, neighbors, and our CVI nonprofits to find ways to discourage and prevent this from continuing and escalating further.

We used to take our boys to La Escuelita there. It’s been a little rough for many years, but this is escalating and terrifying for families/neighbors.

Trump Accuses Democrats of Sedition, β€˜Punishable by Death,’ Over Message to the Military

Democratic electeds remind military that they have a duty to not obey illegal orders (such as extra judicial murders).

President then threatens Dems with death for daring to speak out in favor of upholding the law and our constitution.

Great reporting.

Yes, a new capital gains tax will take some lead time to collect, which is why we should pass it sooner than later!

Also, once we do pass it, we can at least plan on those revenues coming in eventually to relieve some of the deficit pressure.

I can just see the right-wing news headlines: β€œSo-called socialist mayor earns 6-figure salary and can afford rent and childcare in one of the most expensive cities. Does she really represent working people?”

Tech dining workers and allies packed the room last night to announce a new deadline for LavishRoots, Meta's cafeteria operator in Bellevue, Redmond, and SoDo. By December 1st, we demand Lavish end their anti-union campaign and agree to a fair process for union recognition!

Proud to stand in solidarity with dining workers at LavishRoots, who feed Meta's campuses here in the Seattle area. The right to organize and bargain are essential to our region's economy. LavishRoots, do the right thing: agree to a fair process for union recognition by December 1st! #thisisyourcity

Awesome job mayor-elect @wilsonforseattle.bsky.social!

Not easy going on national media, but this was spot on.

I think when you know who you are and stay true to your values, it makes interviews like this easier.

Really should be all of the above. Some of these revenues (like a wealth tax) will likely be slower to collect, whereas others like a corporate payroll tax should be easier, especially since it already survived legal challenges.

We need to push state electeds (including Gov.) across the state to go on the record in support of significant new progressive revenues. And anyone who doesn’t support deserves to be challenged.

Good news and good on Noel Frame. This year's election results across WA show a *very* clear voter mandate to tax the rich. It's not just Seattle or King County. The whole state wants to tax the rich to fund public services. Dems in Olympia should be wary of resisting that mandate.

Thank you to CM Rinck for her leadership here.

We will certainly need to partner with County, State and Federal delegation.

In particular, we need State electeds to adopt new progressive revenues, like a statewide Corporate Payroll Tax or a Wealth Tax to make up for these cruel cuts.
