The genetic risk of depression is a stronger predictor of heart problems in women than men: new research Women with a higher genetic risk of depression are more likely to develop heart disease – even if they’ve never had a diagnosis of depression or other psychiatric disorders.

Women are understudied, underdiagnosed and undertreated for CVDs. Our study calls for more accurate CVD risk prediction and effective risk screening in women, especially young women, who have a high depression prevalence and are traditionally underestimated for CVD risks. ♥️💙💜💚🧡💛🩵🩷

💜 Main findings 3 💜:
This sex difference was not explained by well-known risk factors, e.g. BMI and high cholesterol.

💙 Main findings 2 💙:
Similar associations were seen between women who have and have not gone through menopause at study enrolment.

♥️ Main findings 1 ♥️:
Using UK Biobank data, genetic risk of depression was associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease and heart failure even in the absence of a depression diagnosis or psychiatric medication use. The same was not seen in men.
