Bought Chicago 17 on LP & recorded it on cassette to listen to in the car. A few weeks later I bought the Footloose soundtrack & put it on the other side of the tape.

I wasn’t a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, but I went to see Garbage open for them & stayed for the whole show. Billy Corgan made an arena show feel like we were in a small auditorium. His musicianship & audience banter were both amazing.

It’s an 8 on the REM scale (relative to their other records) but a 9 in the real world. It took the by-then ubiquitous grunge a whole new direction. Crush with Eyeliner was a revelation at the time.

What I respect most about this album is that it showed they weren’t going to stick to any kind of formula. After the massive success of the first half of the 90’s they were not afraid to keep being creative & doing the unexpected.
