I'm reminded, with a certain bleak humour in the aptness, that the heroine of Tavernier's Death Watch made her living having her computer write romance novels.

And that's what I liked about it. It personalized the Big Giant Tragedy, without romanticizing anything. Mind you, I do think THE BIRTHDAY BOYS is better.

One reason I particularly liked EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF was because I've never read another novel about such a major historical event that so narrowed its focus on a couple of historical nobodies who, if I recall correctly, aren't even particularly likable.

The little moments of guilt -- or more accurately, shame -- that come through in Pesci's performance...

If the Oscar for casting existed in 2019 then Ellen Lewis should have won for these two alone.

Yeah, the final irony is that Paquin is really good in it.

I also love how Peggy, the character Anna Paquin played as an adult and Scorsese got yelled at for not giving more lines to, is so much the moral center of this film that even Russell Bufalino, one of the worst people in the movie, knows it. "It's okay, she said thank you once, that's enough."

Like who could even imagine something so silly!

And Ray Romano is so perfect that people don't even know how good he is here.

Can't sleep, sour mood, might as well watch THE IRISHMAN again. I've had a hard time locking into movies, any movie, lately, but I fell right into this one again. The part of this that's about two old men on a long road trip to kill a guy is so good. The tone of it is beautifully judged.

That song is *amazing*. I know it's such an obvious thing to say, but we do take it for granted at this point.

Listened to a lot of Stones today while we were out and about. It's somehow easy to forget, given how cartoonist the band has become, how truly great a lot of those songs are great as *songs*, with some incredible lyrics, not simply "cool rock tunes" as the kids say.

I've already read DAVID COPPERFIELD, so that's handy.
