In order to settle, there has to be a tiny possibility of an actionable case (or the BBC needing US federal approval, which it doesn’t). That’s not going to happen. And $1 billion is laughable.

What is the mechanism for him to sue for a programme that was not broadcast in the country in which he intends to sue?

It’s not enough.

I know. Very much, I know. That’s why I used my character limit saying successive govts.

But the govt needs to raise money and if they’re not doing it via income tax because of the political implications, they’ll do more like the above. And then we’ll bemoan stagnant productivity.

Is disingenuous politicking and does not incentivise the right sort of behaviours that we want from the tax system. People shouldn’t be worried about taking that promotion means they’d be worse off (or close to it).

But they do things like clawing back child benefit and the personal allowance on “people that work”, creating incentives to salary sacrifice, work fewer days etc because the marginal rate ends up being so high. They’ve done that just so they (successive govts) can say we’ve not raised income taxes.

I’m absolutely gutted (and furious).

We should be using the tax system to incentive work and not have people reconsidering promotions or moving to 4 days a week etc.

Why on earth irredeemably broken?

Also the audiobook is excellent - it’s a full cast and is very much like listening to a play. Great work!

The Cut Throat Trial by @barristersecret.bsky.social is a superb legal thriller. I loved the drip feed approach by using the perspectives of different actors in the trial. It manages to be pacy, gripping, shocking, and yet, truly believable.

I’ve been recommending it to everyone.

Have you not heard of perfectly normal people saving up to go private because they can’t wait in pain any longer? Or without that diagnosis, etc?

It can’t be done unless the NHS can properly fill the gap.
