Pull quote from review of THE DRIVER'S STORY in the Journal of Southern History. Text reads: "The stories in this volume, taken together, provide an incredible glimpse into the daily lives of drivers, the struggles they faced, and the careful calculations that they madeβ€”including whether to support rebellionsβ€”in order to survive the unrelenting violence of the plantation driving system. This is an excellent book.”

At Xavier University, players get paid for attention while professors get cut | Opinion Opinion: For smaller, tuition-dependent schools like Xavier, putting players on the payroll can be a risky proposition.

"Xavier’s enrollment continues to decline...the university has now seen a 36% drop in first-year enrollment over two years...The response? A plan to cut budgets, including faculty and staff positions." I got my official pay cut letter a few days ago.

With enrollment dipping, cuts are looming at Xavier University Xavier University will have about 17% fewer freshmen this fall. It will "prudently reduce expenses" in response.

I'm grateful for this incisive, thoughtful AHR review by Justin Roberts of THE DRIVER'S STORY, which he calls "a beautifully written, thoughtful, and engaging book” that is also short enough to be "ideal for an undergraduate course or a popular audience.” academic.oup.com/ahr/article/...

Screenshot of United Chatbot, reading: "You can bring a surfboard on your trip from CVG to Managua with United Airlines. The surfboard must be packed in a board bag and weigh less than 100 pounds (45.3 kg). It should not exceed 115 total inches (length + width + height) if you're flying on United. If your flight has an extra bag limit, surfboards aren't accepted unless you're flying to Costa Rica, which includes Managua."

Yet another reason the shift to AI everything is not going smoothly. @unitedairlinesual.bsky.social chatbot thinks that Managua (capital of Nicaragua) is part of Costa Rica.

Ah, the annual ritual of spending a day ir two completing "annual update" (self-evaluation) paperwork, so that department chairs can spend precious summer time evaluating faculty only for the university to determine we're all equally deserving of a 0% merit raise.
