page 1, frames 1–2: the dock on a summer night; it's christmas for the southern globe. at the start of the page on top of frame 1, an eye symbol begins a mechanical voice line that gives the following directions: “target in 5m. target is unarm —” and is turned off before finishing “unarmed”. in the first frame, flynn t. stone, a stoic dockworker, is seen from the back, walking slowly past a wall of containers. she's wearing a white t-shirt and a pair of cargo pants, holding a short in her left hand. there's a gentle wind coming from the side. in the second frame, the viewer is following her closer, and she turns her head to the right to look behind her.

page 2, frame 3: it is revealed that the person following flynn has been rosa. the scene is viewed from between two containers. rosa is in her work attire: a fencing jacket-type shirt, a long black skirt fastened with a wide waistband, black stockings, black boots with metallic toes and heels, and a decorated silver gorget. she holds out her hand in front of her as if holding a sword point-in-line; there is something between her fingers. flynn is half turned towards her, and and the viewer discovers flynn's left face covered in a large burn scar.

page 3, frames 4–8: in frame 4, from flynn's point of view, she sees rosa's face. the wind lifts her hair and reveals her prosthetic left eye, surrounded by a bird-shaped wound. her expression is mostly neutral, but there's a tinge of surprise in her right eye. frame 5 is a close-up of their hands. rosa is holding a small hand-carved wooden bird figurine in her palm, and flynn touches it with her fingers. the chain coming out of rosa's palm is visible. in frame 6, we see flynn's reaction from rosa's point of view. she holds the bird figurine in her right hand and caresses it with her left, smiling wide. in frame 7, from the same point of view, flynn is closer to rosa and has looked up, holding the figurine in both hands in front of her chest, always smiling. the frame is cut on the right side, and frame 8 inserts in the space thus created. frame 8 sees rosa's reaction up close through flynn's eyes. she has turned her face away to the left, and her left eye is thus hidden behind her hair again. she is smiling faintly, and the wound starts bleeding. the end. a line is written below frame 8: “for flynn & cheese. all the best for 2026! rosa / cécile.”

Cover Art for my new comic collection, EXHAUST Double Feature: Eminence + Hell, New Mexico

This year I'm going to compile my old web comic EXHAUST into downloadable PDF volumes. To start, here's a double feature: two prequel stories set in this post-apocalyptic world, featuring robot workers in search of a better life.

Two fragments of Rhaetian minuscule that have been digitally rejoined to reveal that they are the upper and lower part of the same leaf. At the top is a darker photograph of a piece of parchment with 8 lines of this pre-Caroline script; at the bottom is a brighter exposure of a piece with the lower fourteen lines, and an attached (18C) label that reads "Fragmentum Saec.
