she let casey walk kiyoshi out and stayed there, elbows on the balcony table, head buried in her hands. the city buzzed below, but all she could hear was her own pulse, too fast and too loud, and the question looping in her mind: what the hell was she doing?

scarlett shot up from her chair like the table had caught fire, while kiyoshi, somehow, took his time standing. she fumbled for words, awkward and flustered, wondering how he could stay so effortlessly calm in every damn situation.

that's when casey barged in, apparently back with his sister and looking for his mom. he froze mid-step at the sight of her sitting way too close to the neighbor, eyes wide like she’d just been caught doing something she shouldn’t.

the words hung between them. she felt her breath hitch. he wasn’t smiling anymore, not really. just watching her, steady and open. their fingers hovered close, their knees brushing ever so slightly. she felt both frozen and on fire, as if she was plugged straight into something electric.

she desperately tried to sound casual at the mention of her age. or, rather, the subtle suggestion of their age difference. but she couldn't stop her pulse from picking up as he looked her up and down before gesturing vaguely towards her.

when he came back from the kitchen, empty-handed, he sat down again, but closer this time. hadn’t he gotten the memo she was trying to avoid just that? she scrambled for something to say, but the only thing that came out was the stupid lasagna. which, somehow, he still managed to turn into flirting.

she was unable to remove her hand. nothing was showing on his face, but his tone had undoubtedly shifted. it felt like a wire stretched between them. she had to do or say something to break the tension, so she tried to take the empty glasses inside, but of course, he interrupted her with a "let me."

she studied him for a moment. he was calm, composed, but there was something underneath it. something that made her chest ache in a way she hadn’t expected. without thinking, she placed a compassionate hand on his shoulder, immediately sending an electric jolt through her body.

kioyoshi hesitated for a beat, then slowly turned around to face her, leaning back on the table. he went on, his tone light, almost detached, like he was telling someone else’s story. scarlett’s throat tightened.

scarlett snorted and finally looked up at him. she couldn't stop herself from giving in to her curiosity.

minutes later, they ended up on the balcony, two glasses between them, city lights flickering below. the air was cool, and the quiet between them was easy in a way that surprised her. still, scarlett kept her eyes on the rim of her glass.

he tilted his head slightly, as if thinking it over, before a spark of quiet boldness slid into his tone. for a heartbeat, she hesitated, pulse quickening, before opening the door wider to let him step inside. the faintest grin was ghosting across his face as she closed the door behind them.

he gently interrupted her, his voice easy. but his eyes lingered on hers a moment longer than polite conversation called for, searching hers like he was making sure she really meant it. scarlett fidgeted, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, suddenly aware of how warm her face felt.

but it wasn't j waiting at her doorstep. kiyoshi stood there, hands in his pockets. she couldn't help but notice that he looked slightly less casual and a little more unsure than usual. still, a small smile was tugging at his lips. she blinked, caught completely off guard.

then, one evening when she was home alone, she was pulled out of her thoughts by a knock at the door, which made her stomach drop. she was already prepared to firmly send j back home, explaining the kids weren't there anyway. maybe even call the police, if necessary.
