One of the best bits of wisdom I’ve taken about writing is that you write the first draft to explain it to yourself and then a second to explain it to others.

They skip all that and make sure no one understands anything.

Mainstream coverage of academia this year was all about "wokeness," AI, and accusations of anti-semitism re: Palestine protests, but this is the real story underlying all else. Most people outside of academia have no idea the extent to which higher ed is contracting and crumbling.

There usually more variance within groups than between groups.

Odds ratio is more important than almost anything else.

There are more false positives/false negatives out there than people realize, including in published research.

Discount any research without a power analysis. It is underpowered.

The latter is my approach. Academics boycotting TX isn’t going to matter much. But conferences should not be held in states that, say, endanger the lives of pregnant people (including those with ectopic pregnancies).

Huge win in Florida. The restrictions on providing gender affirming care to trans youth and adults have been found unconstitutional and are now permanently enjoined. Huge win by Simone Chriss and Southern Legal Counsel.

A fascinating article on American colonisation of facial expression and the psychology of emotion. My sister and friends were questioned on the street in Russia in their late teens b/c they smiled at passing people. It was first assumed they were prostitutes. Funny story, but a good lesson.
