Naturalist. Norfolk. Mostly wandering about looking at invertebrates with Kevin Radley (in which case all photos his) or observing the creatures in my garden.

I couldn't watch this video (just too upsetting) but huge thanks to the people out there getting this evidence against these evil people who go out to enjoy causing other living creatures immense suffering. And breaking the law.
04.02.2026 20:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0With regards to the zoo comment - this was about the increasing number of reintroductions, not just pelicans. It involves humans choosing a species, choosing the location, choosing mostly large, characterful species and using tourism to help justify it.
03.02.2026 10:35 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0This made me smile but it's not a laughing matter. You've summed it up perfectly, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
03.02.2026 12:04 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0But we need to have large habitats and a thriving ecosystem in the first place, which we don't in the UK, before any introductions should be considered, in my personal opinion.
03.02.2026 12:00 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0It's a new month, so lets spin the wheel and find out what species a rewilding company wants to introduce next, as we play "Let's turn Norfolk into a big zoo". Ooh, it's...Dalmation Pelican! www.rewildingbritain.org.uk/why-rewild/r... and pressreleasehub.pa.media/article/inte...

Well done for sharing this!
Portrait of the two sexes of the very rare & elusive Giant or Tawny Earwig which once occurred regularly in the Bournemouth area until its coastal habitat was lost to development in the first half of the 20th C. From William Lucas, Monograph of the British Orthoptera, Ray Society, 1920.
07.01.2026 19:49 β π 38 π 7 π¬ 0 π 0I've noticed a huge decline in Common Earwig numbers in our 3 acre garden in Norfolk. We don't use any pesticides and have made no changes to the habitat ant yet numbers have plummeted in the last 4 or 5 years. We are surrounded by arable farmland though...

23.12.2025 12:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Whilst felling trees around the garden pond this weekend discovered this Large White (Pieris brassicae) pupa 13 feet up a Willow (the pupa is safe and well!). I can't recall any of the species food plants growing nearby so it must have wandered a considerable distance.

19.07.2025 12:35 β π 695 π 221 π¬ 11 π 8Accidentally brought this Diaea dorsata into the house today. It would be disingenuous of me to say I love all spiders (I am, sort of, working on it!) but I am fond of Crab Spiders and this species is particularly beautiful.

Not the species we were looking for but for a slug Deroceras laeve (Marsh Slug) has a certain charm due to its diminutive size! This one was about 8mm long.
Also seen today a number of Deroceras agreste, Ruby Tiger
(Phragmatobia fuliginosa) & Drinker (Euthrix potatoria) larvae.

People just love planting trees, and sometimes there's no alternative.
But planted trees will NEVER create anything like the sheer diversity of forms of wild, self-seeded trees.
Only *nature* can do that.
Labour seem determined to wreck whatβs left of our natural world. So many broken promises.

RSPB finds bird populations falling while roads named after those birds are rising. Hmm - is that progress?

Some attractive leaf mines seen today in the Yare Valley.
A Beech leaf with Stigmella tityrella and Phyllonorycter messaniella mines. A Hazel leaf with what I believe is a Stigmella microtheriella mine.

Watching Labour MPs take a wrecking ball to nature makes me so angry & so sad. Their action tonight voting down amendments to the #PlanningBill intended to protect wildlife & habitats from destruction is so reckless & so counterproductive. People didnβt vote Labour for this π
