How the sea ice looked like end of melting season 2024 - the thinner it gets the more sunlight passes though the ice warming the ocean below - its a non-linear feedback. This combined with heatwaves, and stronger Arctic cyclones hitting thinner sea ice in a row during summer and it can be fast gone.

Also another critical model error if this would happen...

This combined with heatwaves, and stronger Arctic cyclones hitting thinner sea ice in a row during summer and it can be fast gone. Also another critical model error if this would happen...

Slowly the realization hits home: Arctic sea ice could be gone before 2030 during one summer (second study)

Just a row of extreme events needed...

The first ice-free day in the Arctic Ocean could occur before 2030 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Arctic sea ice loss during summer would be one ingredient to reach 2°C of warming during a 12 months period around 2030 - adds some ~0.2°C of warming.

From a mechanistic perspective easily possible for the Earth system...

I sat on a bench today looking at this art. A singular, large disk casting all these shadows

Awesome paper about the central role of #soil texture on ecosystem water & #climatechange! It magnificantly shows that, although vegetation-atmosphere exchanges are driven by atmospheric conditions and mediated by plant adjustments, their fate is ultimately dependent on the soil

From a distance, the ice looks mighty. When you stand close to it, it disappears. The white is the empty spaces, is the paper. So the protagonist is told only by its shadows, and through our imagination.
Like an echo, of what we once knew

I've been thinking a lot about 'white' lately....

This absolutely stunning work by Robert Longo called "Untitled (Iceberg for C.D.F)", simply charcoal on mounted paper (3x5m), which I discovered at fabulous #Deichtorhallen Hamburg in 2018, has been echoing within me ever since.
